Liscum/Hock Combine For 53 Points In Win Over Pomona-Pitzer

Claremont, Calif. – Senior guard Steffani Liscum (Tucson, Ariz./Marana H.S.) and freshman forward Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) accounted for 53 points as Arizona Christian University (2-5) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 103-83 victory over Pomona-Pitzer College (0-4) at the David Wells Classic co-hosted by Claremont-Mudd Scripps College in Ted Ducey Gymnasium, Friday, Nov. 25. 

ACU meets Claremont-Mudd Scripps College, Saturday, Nov. 26, at 6 p.m. Arizona time at Pomona-Pitzer College for its second game of the David Wells Classic. The Firestorm hosts their first Arizona Christian University Classic in Fultz Gymnasium, Dec. 2-3. In Friday, Dec. 2 action, Rocky Mountain College (Mont.) meets Johnson and Wales University (Colo.) at 5 p.m., and ACU takes on California State University-Maritime at 7 p.m., in the second game of a doubleheader. In Saturday, Dec. 3 action, Rocky Mountain takes on CSU-Maritime at 2 p.m., and Arizona Christian takes on Johnson and Wales at 4 p.m. 

In his post-game comments, ACU head coach Jerry Conner said, "I was pleased about how hard our girls worked to create a better pace at both the offensive and defensive ends of the court." ACU surpassed the 100-point mark for the second time this season and allowed a season-low 83 to the Sagehens and ended a four-game streak of allowing over 110 points to its opponents. The Firestorm up-tempo style also produced 87 shots and 41 three-point attempts. 

Liscum, who ranked first in scoring (23.3) and fourth in free throw percentage (.964) in the NAIA Division II entering the weekend, made 12 of her 24 field goals and 5 of 14 three-point field goal attempts for 29 points, including 17 points and 3 three-pointers in the first half, and also contributed 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 blocked shots and a steal. Liscum has scored 29 or more points in four of ACU's seven games this season. 

Hock recorded her second double-double of the season with 24 points and 11 rebounds and made 12 of her 15 shots. She scored 10 of her 24 in the first half. ACU led 50-36 at halftime and out-rebounded the Sagehens, 54-50. 

Freshman forward Stephanie Brimhall (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.), Hock's high school teammate, added 6 points, a season-high 11 rebounds and 2 assists, and senior guard Anne Munsil (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy), who ranks 12th in the NAIA Division II in three-point field goal percentage (.483), scored 8 points with one three-pointer and gathered 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Junior guard Jessica Largo (Gallup, N.M./Rehoboth Christian School) tallied 9 points with 3 three-pointers and had 4 rebounds, 2 assists and one steal before fouling out, and freshman center Jamie Heath (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird H.S.) contributed 8 points with one three-pointer, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Freshman guard Liz Erickson (Phoenix, Ariz./ scored 8 points, hitting 4 of her 6 shots, and grabbed 6 rebounds, blocked 3 shots and stole the ball once. 

Five Pomona players scored in double figures, led by guard Emi Hashizume with 20 points, all 4 of Pomona's three-pointers, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Forward Maria Weyhrauch finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals, and starting guards Alexis Sones and Erin Edmonds each tallied 12 points. Edmonds also grabbed 8 rebounds, passed off 7 assists, blocked a shot and stole the ball 3 times. Reserve Asha Gipson contributed 10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals, and starter Ruthie Shapiro totaled 4 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. 

ACU shot .471 from the field (41-87) for the game, made 13 of 41 three-pointers (.317) and 8 of 11 free throws (.727), survived 34 turnovers, blocked 6 shots and stole the ball 12 times from the Sagehens. Pomona shot just .390 from the field (32-82), made 4 of 20 three-pointers (.200) and 15 of 29 free throws (.517) and committed 32 turnovers and stole the ball 18 times from ACU. 

The Firestorm led 27-11 with 11 minutes left to play in the first half and stretched its first-half advantage to 17 points three times before intermission. Pomona sliced the lead to 11 points, 50- 39, on Hashizume's three-pointer 13 seconds into the second half, but the Sagehens drew no closer the rest of the contest. ACU reached its first 20-point lead with 12:37 left in the game on Hock's offensive rebound basket and reached its widest lead of the game, 99-73, on Largo's three-pointer with 2:38 left.
