No. 15 Biola Starts Fast In Win at ACU

Phoenix, Ariz. – Biola University (5-1), ranked number 15 in the NAIA Division II national pre- season coaches' poll, began the game with an 11-2 run, led 46-21 at halftime and stretched its lead to 31 points in the first six minutes of the second half of its 83-63 victory over Arizona Christian University (1-5), Saturday, Nov. 26, in Fultz Memorial Gymnasium. 

ACU made just of its 18 first-half shots (.333) while Biola built its lead by shooting .593 from the field (16-27) in the first 20 minutes. Shooting .609 from the field in the second half (14-23), the Firestorm outscored the Eagles, 42-37, in the second half and sliced Biola's advantage to 18 points, outscoring Biola, 34-21, over a span of 13 minutes, and trailed 79-61 shortly before the end of the contest. 

Biola shot .545 from the field for the game, made 7 of its 9 three-point field goal attempts (.778) and 16 of 24 free throws (.667), and out-rebounded ACU, 36-17, allowing just one offensive rebound to the Firestorm. Biola committed 18 turnovers. ACU shot .488 for the game (20-41), made 7 of 9 three-pointers (.778) and 16 of its 19 free throws (.842), and committed 18 turnovers but stole the ball just once. 

Sophomore guard Albert Suniga (Phoenix, Ariz./Tolleson Union H.S.) made his first appearance of the season after missing five games with a hand injury and contributed 18 points off the bench. Suniga made 5 of his 6 shots and all 7 of his free throw attempts and passed out two assists. Junior guard A.J. Koch (Tucson, Ariz./Flowing Wells H.S.) scored a season-high 19 points, hitting 6 of his 10 shots and all four of his three-point field goal attempts, and senior guard Josh Cole (Phoenix, Ariz./Westview H.S.) added 7 points and 4 assists. Sophomore forward Daniel Cornelius (Phoenix, Ariz./Phoenix Christian H.S./Vanguard University) and sophomore center John Irvine (Phoenix, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy) each scored 6 points and grabbed 2 rebounds. 

Four Biolans finished in double figures, with forward Andre Murillo leading the Eagles with 26 points, 13 rebounds and 2 assists. Murillo made 10 of his 14 shots and 6 of his 7 free throws. Reserve guard Kyle Bailey totaled 12 points and 6 rebounds, and guards Chase Adams and Zack Zaragosa each scored 10 points. Adams made all three of his three-point field goal tries and passed 2 assists. Guard Given Kalipinde added 4 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.
