Phoenix, Ariz. - Arizona Christian University (7-13, 3-1 A.I.I.) extended its modest winning streak to three consecutive games with a 90-61 victory over Northern New Mexico College (2- 14, 0-4 A.I.I.) from Espanola, New Mexico, in Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) women's basketball action, Saturday, Jan. 14, at Fultz Memorial Gymnasium on the ACUÂ
campus.Â
Coached by Jerry Conner, ACU looks to extend its winning streak further with a pair of A.I.I. road games next weekend: Friday, Jan. 20, at Johnson and Wales University in Denver, Colorado, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Jan. 21 against Northern New Mexico College at 1 p.m., at Wildcat Gym at Johnson and Wales University in Denver.Â
ACU, which defeated NNMC, 96-87, Friday night, held the Eagles to 26 fewer points on Saturday. The visitors shot just 23.5 percent from the field (8-34) in the first half and 25.7 percent for the game (18-70) while Arizona Christian shot 52.6 percent (20-38) in the first half and 46.6 percent for the game (34-73).Â
The Firestorm led the entire game after a 2-2 tie in the first 39 seconds of action and reached their first double-digit lead of the game with 12:17 left in the first half and led by 18 points, 50- 32, with 24 seconds left before intermission. ACU reached its first 20-point lead, 60-39, with 14:32 left in the game and gained its first 30-point lead, 74-44, with 6:49 left. ACU led by as much as 32 points, 79-47, at the 5:30 mark.Â
Six Firestorm players scored in double figures, including all five starters. ACU freshman Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) recorded her ninth double-double of the season and second double-double of the weekend, scoring 19 points on 9 of 14 shots, and grabbing 14 rebounds, and also dished out eight assists, narrowly missing a triple-double. Hock now averages 14.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game and ranks tenth in the NAIA Division II with aÂ
55.0 field goal percentage after scoring 34 points with 31 rebounds in two games this weekend against NNMC.Â
The leading scorer in both the NAIA Division II and the National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) with a 22.5 point average, senior guard Steffani Liscum (Tucson, Ariz./Marana H.S.) finished with 15 points, all in the first half, one three-pointer, eight rebounds, four assists, three blocked shots and three steals. Liscum established ACU's single-game scoring record of 39 points Friday night against Northern New Mexico and passed the 900 career-point mark (907) in her 40th career game at ACU.Â
Freshman starting forward Stephanie Brimhall (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.), Hock's high school teammate, contributed 12 points, eight in the second half, seven rebounds and one steal, and freshman forward Jamie Heath (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird H.S.) added 13 points, eight in the first half, seven rebounds, one blocked shot and three steals off the ACU bench. Junior guard Jessica Largo (Gallup, N.M./Rehoboth Christian H.S.) added 10 points, one three-pointer, five rebounds, three assists and one steal, and senior guard Anne Munsil (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy) contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Munsil has scored 785 points in 80 career games during four seasons at ACU.Â
Northern New Mexico was led by forward Nisa Duran with 23 points and 13 rebounds, and guard Erica Williams with 18 points, 3 three-pointers and three steals. Guard Melanie Vigil, who scored 32 points Friday night, totaled nine points, six assists and four steals on Saturday, and forward Shannon Dez contributed four points and six rebounds.Â
ACU shot 46.6 percent from the field for the game (34-73), 29.2 percent from three-point range (7-24) and just 53.6 percent from the free throw line (15-28). The Firestorm decisively out- rebounded the Eagles, 61-37, survived 29 turnovers, including 18 in the first half, blocked five shots and stole the ball from NNMC 11 times. The Eagles committed 27 turnovers in the game, 17 in the first half, blocked four shots and stole the ball from ACU 14 times NNMC shot 23.5 percent from the field (18-70), 21.7 percent from three-point range (5-23) and 80.0 percent from the free throw line (20-25).
