Phoenix, Ariz. -- California State University-San Marcos (14-10, 2-1 A.I.I.) drained 12 three- pointers in 23 attempts (.522) and gained a measure of revenge on Arizona Christian University with a 73-41 Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference men's basketball victory, in front of a Homecoming crowd of 400 in Fultz Memorial Gymnasium, Saturday, Jan. 28. ACU had defeated CSU-San Marcos, 94-89 in overtime, Dec. 19.
ACU (7-15, 3-3 A.I.I, 5-3 PCAC), coached by Rick Roth, takes a 10-day break in the schedule and returns to action with a home Pacific Christian Athletics Conference (PCAC) contest against West Coast Baptist College, Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m., in Fultz Memorial Gymnasium. West Coast Baptist defeated ACU in Lancaster, Calif., Dec. 16, by a score of 103-90.
Cal State-San Marcos led by as many as 18 points, 38-20, with 1:23 left before halftime and made six three-pointers, two each by senior guard Tim Steed and junior guards Daniel Redmon and Jacob Ranger. CSUSM led 40-23 at intermission after shooting 59.3 percent from the field (27-62) while ACU shot just 26.7 percent (8-30) and committed 10 turnovers in the first half.
The Cougars added six more long-distance bombs in the second half, five by Ranger, and advanced the lead steadily throughout the second half, outscoring ACU, 33-18, despite shooting just 31.4 percent (11-35). The visitors led by 29 points, 56-27, with 15:11 left in the game after Ranger drilled 3 consecutive three-pointers in a span of 1:22, and took its biggest lead of the game, 73-36, with 4:22 remaining. CSUSM went scoreless the rest of the game, but ACU cut into the lead by just five points.
Ranger led Cal State with 21 points, all on seven three-pointers in 11 tries, and Redmon finished with 18 points on 6 of 8 shots and hit all three of his three-point shots, grabbed four rebounds, passed four assists and stole the ball from ACU six times. Steed added 12 points, two three-pointers, six assists, two blocked shots and three steals, and guard Jamel McGuire totaled
seven points, eight rebounds and three steals. Forward Alpha Ndiaye contributed six points and seven rebounds.
No Firestorm players reached double figures for the game. Off the bench, sophomore forward Daniel Cornelius (Phoenix, Ariz./Phoenix Christian H.S.) scored eight points, hitting four of his five shots, and grabbed four rebounds and one blocked shot, and sophomore guard Albert Suniga (Phoenix, Ariz./Tolleson Union H.S.), ACU's leading scorer (15.5 pg) and rebounder (5.4 rpg) this season, contributed seven points, one three-pointer, four rebounds, two assists and three steals. Freshman reserve guard Judah St. Amand (Phoenix, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy) drained two three-pointers for six points, and senior guards Houston Friend (Phoenix, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy) and Joshua Cole (Phoenix, Ariz./Westview H.S.), and sophomore reserve guard Derek James (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Alta Loma H.S.) each tallied five points. James gathered four rebounds and freshman forward Bryant Avent (Phoenix, Ariz./Valley Christian H.S.) led ACU rebounders with five.
ACU shot 31.4 percent from the field (16-51) for the game, 23.8 percent from three-point range (5-21) and just 40.0 percent from the free throw line (4-10), committed 21 costly turnovers, 11 in the second half, and stole the ball eight times. CSUSM shot 43.5 percent from the field (27-62), 52.2 percent from three-point range (12-23) and 63.6 percent from the free throw line (7-11), and out-rebounded ACU, 39-36. 14 times.
