Vanguard Shuts Out ACU

Costa Mesa, Calif. - Vanguard University, ranked 11th in the Oct. 2 NAIA Top 25 National Coaches' poll, improved its records to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in Golden State Athletics Conference matches, with a 3-0 victory over Arizona Christian University (3-6-1, 0-4-0 GSAC), Saturday, Oct. 6, at Vanguard Field in Costa Mesa, Calif. 

Vanguard won its fourth consecutive match, all by shutouts, and has recorded seven shutouts this season. ACU has lost its last four matches and has been held scoreless five times this season. 

The Firestorm, coached by Carl Cecil (third season), host Hope International University (5-6-1, 0-4-0 GSAC) for a 5 p.m. GSAC match, Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Scottsdale Soccer Complex, Field 2. 

The Eagles outshot visiting Arizona Christian by a wide 30-0 margin, including 16 shots in the second half, and led 17-0 in shots on goal, nine in the second half, and 12-0 in corner kicks, with eight happening in the first 45 minutes. ACU's freshman Sydney Roller-Sotak (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert H.S.) saved 14 Vanguard shots on goal, eight in the second half. 

Vanguard drew first blood early in the first half when junior forward Kayla Arenas tallied her fourth goal of the season just 9:14 into the match. Senior midfielder Lauren Skachenko took the original shot, and Arenas collected the rebound and kicked it into the goal from just inside the penalty area. 

The Lions made the score 2-0 at 21:41 when freshman midfielder Ashley McCutcheon nailed her second goal of the season with an assist from senior forward Amanda Couch. Couch completed Vanguard's scoring with her sixth goal of the season on a free kick from 30 yards out at 67:40 in the second half.
