Oceanside, Calif. - California State University-San Marcos (3-2) shot 53.3 per cent for the game (48-90), grabbed 28 offensive rebounds and out-rebounded Arizona Christian University (2-1) by a wide 70-30 margin in a 113-49 non-conference collegiate women's basketball game contested Tuesday, November 13, at Mira Costa College in Oceanside, Calif.Â
Arizona Christian, guided by second-year head coach Jerry Conner, plays its next two games at the San Diego Christian College Classic in El Cajon, California, meeting La Sierra University (Calif.), Friday, November 30, at 3 p.m. Arizona time, and California State University-Maritime from Vallejo, California, Saturday, December 1, at 6:30 p.m. Arizona time. ACU hosts its first two home contests of the season at the Arizona Christian University Classic, December 7-8.Â
CSUSM, last season's Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Division II champion, scored the first 10 points in the first three minutes of the game and led 61-22 by halftime. The Cougars connected on 55.3 per cent of its shots and passed 18 assists in the first half (26-47). For the game, CSUSM totaled 38 assists on 48 baskets and made 48 of its 90 shots (.533), 5 of 8 three-pointers (.625) and just 12 of 24 free throws (.500) and survived 25 turnovers. CSUSM blocked seven shots and stole the ball from ACU 24 times, and outscored ACU in the paint, 76- 16 and earned 31 second-chance points from offensive rebounds.Â
ACU shot just .246 from the field for the game (15-61), made 3 of 17 three-pointers (.176) and 16 of 25 free throws (.640) and finished with 34 turnovers and 13 steals. Freshman point guard Kiara White (Phoenix, Ariz./Washington H.S.) led ACU with 12 points and had two assists and one steal. Sophomore forward Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.), ACU's leading scorer and rebounder so far this season, finished with just seven points and two rebounds and stole the ball from CSUSM three times. Sophomore forward Stephanie Brimhall (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) also scored seven points and had three rebounds and two steals, and juniorÂ
guard Jubilee Sutherland (Glennallen, Alaska/Glennallen H.S./Eastern Wyoming College) contributed six points, one three-pointer, five rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal. Junior guard Tenisha Royston (Shiprock, N.M./Shiprock H.S./Scottsdale CC) added three points and three steals.Â
Seven Cal State-San Marcos players scored 10 or more points and the Cougars' bench players outscored ACU's reserves, 63-25. Sophomore forward Heather Thompson led all scorers and rebounders with 20 points on 10 of 13 shots and 17 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. Thompson scored 16 points and gathered 13 rebounds in the second half and also passed off five assists, blocked two shots and stole the ball three times from ACU. Senior guard Mechel'la Logan finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, including 14 points and six rebounds in the first half, and 6-0 junior forward Danielle Cooper grabbed 15 rebounds and scored eight points, and gave CSUSM six points and nine rebounds in the second half. Junior guard Anna Nguyen added 13 points, two assists and a steal, and forward Sherika Miller scored 13 points, gathered seven rebounds and stole the ball four times.Â
Guard Sarah Jackson contributed 12 points, eight assists, six steals, three rebounds and one blocked shot, and reserve guard Jessica Harris had 10 points, 2 three-pointers, eight rebounds, six assists and one blocked shot.
