Espanola, N.M. - Five players scored 11 or more points as Arizona Christian University opened the 2012-13 season with a 100-51 collegiate men's basketball exhibition victory over Cincinnati Christian College (0-1), Friday, November 2, at the Santa Claran Classic hosted by Northern New Mexico College in Espanola, New Mexico. The contest does not count toward ACU's season record or individual and team statistics.
The Firestorm, led by first-year head coach Jeff Rutter, play against the host school, Northern New Mexico College (1-2), Saturday, November 3, at 6 p.m. Arizona time.
Senior guard A.J. Koch (Tucson, Ariz./Flowing Wells H.S.), a four-year letter-winner, led the Firestorm with 16 points on 6 of 12 shots, hit one three-pointer, passed off five assists and stole the ball from CCC twice. Sophomore forward Bryant Avent (Phoenix, Ariz./Valley Christian H.S.) contributed 13 points on 6 of 12 shots, grabbed six rebounds, blocked two shots and stole the ball twice, and junior guard Mason Jones (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View H.S./Eastern Oregon Univ.) added 14 points, 2 three-pointers, five rebounds, two assists and one steal. Junior guard Jordan Block (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Claremont H.S./Pasadena City College) tallied 12 points with one three-pointer and had three rebounds, one blocked shot and two steals, and junior guard Greg Womack (Edmond, Okla./Edmond North H.S./Maryland- Eastern Shore) totaled 11 points with 3 three-pointers and grabbed six rebounds and also had a blocked shot and a steal.
Freshman Mike Navar (Chino, Calif./Chino Hills H.S. scored seven points and gathered a game- high 10 rebounds, and junior forward Daniel Cornelius (Phoenix, Ariz./Phoenix Christian H.S.) added nine points, one three-pointer, and three rebounds. Jones, Block, Navar, and Womack all were making their ACU debuts.
The Firestorm led 46-25 at the halftime intermission, despite shooting just .410 from the field, but warmed up to .575 (23-40) in the second half. For the game, ACU made 39 of 79 field goals
(.494), 10 of 27 from three-point range (.370) and 12 of 16 free throws (.750), outrebounded the Crusaders, 45-34, including 17 offensive rebounds, blocked three shots and stole the ball 13 times, and committed 17 turnovers.
Cincinnati Christian committed 27 turnovers in the contest and made just 17 of 48 shots (.354) for the game and 9 of 27 (.333) in the first half. The Crusaders made just 2 of 13 three-pointers (.154) and 15 of 27 free throws (.556) and stole the ball four times from ACU.
Sophomore forward Antonio Fairbanks led CCC with 14 points and four rebounds, and freshman forward Michael Richardson added 11 points, four rebounds and one blocked shot. Sophomore guard Denzel Andrews finished with seven points, eight rebounds and two steals, and freshman guard Pat Lawson contributed seven points, one three-pointer, five rebounds and one steal.
