Late Run by CSU-Maritime Stops ACU

Atherton, Calif. - California State University-Maritime (6-2) outscored Arizona Christian University (3-1), 19-7, over the last 3:04 of the game and defeated the Firestorm, 76-64, at the Lamont Ramsey Classic, hosted by Menlo College in the Haynes-Prim Pavilion in Atherton, California, Saturday, November 24. CSU-Maritime, the defending champion of the California Pacific Conference and pre-season favorite to win its conference this season, has won five consecutive games and stopped ACU's season-starting winning streak at three games. 

The Firestorm make the trip to 33rd Ave. and Camelback to play an exhibition game against crosstown rival Grand Canyon University in GCU Arena, Monday, November 26, at 6:30 p.m., and then plays against University of California-Santa Cruz at the University of Redlands' Lee Fulmer Classic, Saturday, December 8, at 6 p.m., Arizona time. 

Guard Howie Manzo led all scorers with 16 points and went 4-for-5 from three-point range in the first half. The Keelhaulers drilled 7 of their 14 from long range and led by as many as 12, 33-21, with 1:11 left, just before ACU cut the margin to 33-26 with the last five points of the half. Junior guard Charles King (Houston, Tex./Stephen F. Austin H.S./Phoenix College) canned a three-pointer with 15 seconds left before intermission. 

ACU cut CSUM's lead to two points seven times in the first 14 minutes of the second half and trailed 51-49. CSUM took 2 five-point leads, 55-50 and 57-52, but ACU responded with five consecutive points and finally tied the game, 57-57, on a lay-up and free throw by junior guard Jordan Block (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Claremont H.S./Pasadena City College) with 3:50 left to play. However, the Keelhaulers followed with five consecutive points at the beginning of its game-deciding 19-7 run and led 62-57 with 2:09 left in the game. 

Guard Jacquai Wiley scored eight points in the final 1:43 of the contest and gave CSUM a 65- 59 lead with a three-point play with 1:18 remaining and a 69-59 lead with a fast-break basket after an ACU turnover with 49 seconds to go. 

Junior guard Mason Jones (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View H.S./Eastern Oregon Univ.) led ACU with 16 points and 3 three-pointers and also had two assists and one steal, and Charles King finished with 14 points and 2 three-pointers and made 8 of his 9 free throws and passed three assists. Senior guard A.J. Koch (Tucson, Ariz./Flowing Wells H.S.) scored 10 points with one three-pointer and had one steal, and now has 968 career points in 85 games in four seasons. Block, ACU's leading scorer at 14.3 points per game, finished with just five points and five rebounds, and freshman forward Jackson Helms (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley H.S.) contributed seven points, making five of his six free throws, four rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal. 

Manzo led CSU-Maritime with 24 points, four three-pointers, three assists and one steal, and guard Grant Blaser finished with 13 points, one three-pointers, two rebounds and three steals and made all six of his free throws. Wiley contributed 11 points, one three-pointer, six rebounds, five assists and two steals, and guards Erik Hanson and Casey Healy each scored nine points. Hanson also gathered four rebounds, passed six assists, blocked one shot and stole the ball twice from ACU, and Healy made 3 three-pointers and had three assists and four rebounds. 

ACU made 15 of its 47 field goals (.319), and shot just .292 from the field in the first half (7-24). The Firestorm also made 6 of 21 from three-point range (.286) and 28 of 34 free throws (.824), including 20 of 22 in its second-half comeback effort. The Firestorm out-rebounded CSU- Maritime, 32-31, and grabbed 13 offensive rebounds, passed 10 assists, blocked two shots, stole the ball six times, and committed 16 turnovers in the game. 

CSU-Maritime made 26 of 54 shots (.481), including 14 of 26 (.538) in the second half, and drilled 9 of 20 three-pointers (.450) and 15 of 20 free throws (.750), including 13 of 17 in the second half (.765), and committed 13 turnovers, but just five in the first half, and stole the ball from ACU 11 times.
