SAN DIEGO, Calif. - University of San Diego, a NCAA Division I school from the West Coast Athletics Conference, improved its season record to 6-5 with an 88-65 collegiate men's basketball victory over Arizona Christian University, Tuesday, December 11, at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on the USD campus. Arizona Christian counts the game as an exhibition which does not count on its record or team and individual statistics.
USD led by at least 20 points for the entire last 3:49 of the first half and took a 47-27 margin into the halftime locker room, and opened up a 32-point lead with a 15-1 run in the second half. USD's reserves outscored ACU's bench players, 37-14.
ACU (4-1) hosts Northern New Mexico College (4-11), Friday, December 14, at 7:30 p.m., in Fultz Memorial Gymnasium, in the second game of a collegiate basketball doubleheader which also features ACU women's basketball (3-4) against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (7-3) from Rapid City, S.D. at 5:30 p.m. ACU edged NNMC, 75-74, in a Nov. 3 meeting in Espanola, New Mexico, the Firestorm's first official game of the 2012-13 season.
Senior forward Ken Rancifer led the all scorers with a career-high 27 points, making 10 of 12 shots and 6 of 8 three-pointers, and also gathered six rebounds, and junior reserve guard Mike Davis scored a season-high 15 points on 7 of 12 shots and had five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Sophomore guard Johnny Dee, last week's WCAC Player of the Week, finished with 11 points, one three-pointer, three assists and one steal, and sophomore forward John Sinis contributed six points, one three-pointer, seven rebounds and two assists. Senior forward Chris Manresa added five points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots, and sophomore guard Christopher Anderson totaled six points, six rebounds, eight assists and three steals.
Junior guard Mason Jones (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View H.S./Eastern Oregon Univ.) led ACU with 20 points, making 8 of his 14 shots and 4 of 7 from three-point range, and also had three steals, and junior guard Jordan Block (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Claremont
H.S./Pasadena City College) scored 14 points, all in the second half, with 2 three-pointers, two rebounds and one assist. Senior guard A.J. Koch (Tucson, Ariz./Flowing Wells H.S.) added four points, four rebounds, seven assists and one steal, and junior guard Charles King (Houston, Tex./Stephen F. Austin H.S./Phoenix College) finished with nine points, 2 three-pointers and two steals. Junior center Daniel Cornelius (Phoenix, Ariz./Phoenix Christian H.S.) scored six points and had one three-pointer and five rebounds, and freshman forward Mike Navar (Chino, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) gave ACU six points, 2 three-pointers, four rebounds and one steal.
University of San Diego made 36 of its 60 field goal attempts (.600) and shot .621 (18-29) in the second half. The Torerors also made 8 of 17 three-pointers (.471) and 8 of 14 free throws (.571), out-rebounded ACU, 42-26, committed 18 turnovers, blocked seven shots, and stole the ball from ACU nine times. ACU made 25 of 63 field goals (.397), 11 of 24 from three-point range (.458) and 4 of 7 free throws (.571), committed 16 turnovers, blocked two shots and stole the ball from the Toreros nine times.
A 15-2 run by the Toreros in a span of 5:31 created a 21-10 lead with 8:47 left in the first half. A pair of three-pointers by Navar cut USD's lead to 23-16 with 7:36 left, but Rancifer answered with a pair of three-pointers and gave the Toreros a 31-16 lead with 5:58 remaining. A 13-3 run in a span of 2:37 gave USD its widest advantage, 44-20, with 2:57 to go until intermission, and the Toreros led 47-27 at halftime.
Rancifer led all scorers with 17 points and 4 three-pointers, and Dee scored nine points in the first half for the hosts, and Jones scored eight points with 2 three-pointers and Navar and Cornelius added six each in the first half for ACU. ACU committed 10 first-half turnovers and shot just .333 (10-30) from the field, although the Firestorm did make 6 of 11 from three-point range (.545). USD committed six turnovers and shot .581 from the field (18-31) and also made 6 of 12 three-pointers (.500).
USD outscored ACU, 15-1, in a span of five minutes and led its biggest margin, 68-36, with 12:26 to play in the game. Rancifer accounted for eight of USD's points during the streak. The Toreros later equaled their biggest lead, 74-42, with 9:44 left, and led by no fewer than 23 points the rest of the game.
