ACU Leads into 70th Minute But Falls To No. 23 TMC

Phoenix, Ariz. - Arizona Christian University (3-4-1, 0-2-0 GSAC) scored 6:37 into the first half and led 1-0 through the 70th minute of play until The Master's College (7-1-2, 2-0-0 GSAC) scored three goals in a span of 14 minutes to overcome the Firestorm, 3-1, on a hot early fall Saturday, Sept. 29, at Scottsdale Christian Academy. TMC ranks 23rd in the Sept. 25 NAIA Top 25 National Coaches' poll.

The Firestorm, coached by Carl Cecil (third season), plays a pair of GSAC matches in southern California this week, traveling to Biola University (4-4-1, 1-1-0 GSAC) in La Mirada, Wednesday, Oct. 3 for a 4:30 p.m. match and to 17th ranked Vanguard University (6-2-0, 2-0-0 GSAC) in Costa Mesa, Saturday, Oct. 6, for a 4 p.m. match. Biola edged number 14 Concordia, 2-1, in a Sept. 29 match in Irvine, and has defeated number seven ranked Westmont, 2-0, and Hope International, 3-0, in its two most recent matches.

Sophomore midfielder Chelsea Ruland (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian Academy), ACU's career scoring leader with 17 career goals in 20 career matches, scored just 6:37 into the first half, giving ACU a 1-0 lead with her seventh goal of the 2012 season. Ruland took a pass from freshman forward Jesslyn Jana (Placerville, Calif./El Dorado H.S.) and lifted a 20-yard shot over TMC goalkeeper Ilyssa Espiritu. Jana's fourth assist of the season also established school single-season and career assists record.

Meanwhile, ACU's defense continued to weather TMC's shooting barrage and led still 1-0 after the first 25 minutes of the second half. The Mustangs outshot ACU, 13-2, in the first half and 32-2 for the match, and also led 6-1 in corner kicks. TMC attempted 16 shots on goal, while ACU managed no shots directly on Espiritu. Freshman goalkeeper Sydney Roller-Sotak (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert H.S.) saved 13 TMC shots on goal, seven in the second half.

Freshman midfielder Tara Struiksma finally knotted the score at 1-1, with her third goal of the season at 70:01 in the second half, with an assist from senior midfielder Gia Loza. Nearly six minutes later, TMC's leading scorer, sophomore midfielder Shea Richards, earned her eighth goal of the season with an unassisted play at 75:50, putting the Mustangs ahead, 2-1, and Struiksma talled again at 84:52, her fourth goal of the season, with Richards assisting on the insurance goal.
