FULLERTON, Calif. - Hope International University (9-9, 1-2 GSAC) led 48-20 at halftime and went on to defeat Arizona Christian University (4-11, 0-3 GSAC), 85-48, in Golden State Athletics Conference (GSAC) women's basketball action in Darling Pavilion in Fullerton, California, Tuesday, Jan. 15.
Coached by Jerry Conner, ACU plays its next GSAC game, Saturday, January 19, at the NAIA's number one team, Vanguard University (11-1, 2-1 GSAC) at The Pit in Costa Mesa, California, at 5:30 p.m. (6:30 Arizona time). However, No. 11 Westmont College (12-3, 3-0 GSAC) moved into second place in the GSAC with a 66-56 upset win on Tuesday over top- ranked Vanguard, less than 24 hours after the Lions moved from number two to number one in the nation. The ACU men's basketball team also plays at third-place Vanguard in the second game of Saturday's GSAC doubleheader (8:30 Arizona time).
In other GSAC women's basketball action Tuesday, the NAIA's number 8 team, The Master's College (16-0, 3-0 GSAC), the first-place team in the GSAC, beat fourth-place Concordia University (4-11, 2-1 GSAC), 78-67, and San Diego Christian College (9-10, 1-2 GSAC) hit a three-pointer with 31 seconds left to edge Biola University (9-9, 0-3 GSAC), which received votes for the National Top 25, 66-63, in San Diego.
Hope International scored 12 consecutive points during a 19-2 run midway through the first half and led 25-9 with 8:22 left, and stretched the lead to 30 points, 46-16, three minutes before leading 48-20 at halftime. Sophomore forward Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.), ACU's leading scorer and rebounder (13.4 ppg and 8.3 rpg) led ACU with 7 points and 9 rebounds in the first 20 minutes, and guard Brittany Bauman scored 13 points and forward Shawna Staves tallied 10 for the Royals in the first half.

Hock added 14 points and 9 rebounds more in the second half, but HIU continued to add to its lead which reached 40 points, 82-42, with 2:02 left in the game. Reserve guard Briana Stewart scored 11 points with 3 three-pointers for Hope International in the second half.
Hock finished with her third double-double of the season and second in the last two games, scoring 21 points and grabbing 18 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards. Hock made 9 of her 12 shots and also blocked one HIU shot. Freshman guard Kiara White (Phoenix, Ariz./Washington H.S.) totaled 10 points, three rebounds and one steal, and senior guard Paula Clendaniel (Tucson, Ariz./Cienega H.S./York College (Neb.) and junior forward Aria Ham (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain H.S./Arizona Western College) scored five points each. Jamie Heath (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird H.S.) contributed two points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal, and sophomore forward Stephanie Brimhall (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) finished with four points, seven rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal.
Five Royals scored 10 or more points, led by Bauman with 21 points, 3 three-pointers, four assists and five steals, and Staves with 14 points and 12 rebounds, five assists, five blocked shots and four steals. Stewart and forward Krystal Canning totaled 13 points each. Stewart also made 3 three-pointers and had five rebounds, five assists and one steal, and Canning gathered six rebounds, passed two assists and had one steal. Reserve guard Destiny Chavez totaled 10 points, five rebounds and four assists, and guard Kasey Philyaw scored seven points and had four rebounds and five assists.
ACU made 19 of its 61 shots (.311), just one of its 20 three-point field goal tries (.050) and 9 of 14 free throws (.643), out-rebounded Hope International, 50-48, committed 28 turnovers, blocked three shots and stole the ball four times. Hope made 35 of its 87 shots in the game (.402), 8 of its 17 three-pointers (.471) and 7 of 12 free throws (.583) and gathered 24 offensive rebounds. The Royals also committed just eight turnovers, blocked five shots and stole the ball 12 times from the Firestorm.
