San Diego Christian Shoots Past ACU

PHOENIX, Ariz. - San Diego Christian College (11-10, 3-2 GSAC) led 50-22 at halftime and went on a 96-52 Golden State Athletics Conference women's basketball victory over Arizona Christian University (4-13, 0-5 GSAC), Tuesday, Jan. 22, in ACU's Fultz Memorial Gym. 

Coached by Jerry Conner, ACU hosts its next GSAC game at Fultz Memorial Gym, Saturday, January 26, against the NAIA's number nine-ranked team Westmont College (14-3, 5-0 GSAC), at 5:30 p.m. Westmont took over sole possession of first place in the GSAC with a 68-57 win at number eight-ranked The Master's College (17-1, 4-1 GSAC) in its most recent game on Tuesday. The ACU men's basketball team hosts number six-ranked Westmont College in the second game of Saturday's GSAC doubleheader at 7:30 p.m. 

In other GSAC women's basketball action Tuesday, Biola University (10-10, 1-4 GSAC) earned its first GSAC victory with a 69-61 decision at Hope International University (9-11, 1-4 GSAC), and the GSAC's third-place team and NAIA's number three-ranked team Vanguard University (13-1, 4-1 GSAC) routed Concordia University (4-13, 2-3 GSAC), 77-57. 

San Diego Christian scored the first eight points of the game and led by 22 points, 34-12, with 4:54 left in the first half and 50-22 just 27 seconds before halftime. SDC forward Jermani Stewart recorded a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds in the first half, and guard Chardonnay Shula added 11 points in the first 20 minutes. Sophomore forward Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.), ACU's leading scorer and rebounder (13.1 ppg and 7.9 rpg) and sophomore forward Jamie Heath (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird H.S.) each scored six points in the first half to lead ACU. 

The Hawks made 21 of their 46 field goals (.457) and five three-pointers and out-rebounded the Firestorm, 32-10, and stole the ball 12 times in the first half. ACU made 10 of its 25 first-half shots and missed all five of its three-point field goal tries, and committed 14 first-half turnovers that led to 16 SDC points. 

In the second half, ACU committed 19 turnovers that gave the Hawks 26 more gift points. San Diego Christian put together a 23-8 run in the first 11:10 of the second half and led by 41 points, 73-32. ACU answered back with a 13-1 streak and cut back the Hawks' lead to 74-45 at the 6:01 mark, but drew no closer. San Diego Christian regained its 41-point lead twice in the last three minutes, and reached its widest advantage of the game with 29 seconds remaining when it reach the final margin, 96-52. 

Reserve guard Hannah Miller led all scorers in the game with 19 points and 4 three-pointers, and also added two rebounds, three assists, one blocked shot and four steals, and Shula added 18 points, 4 three-pointers, four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Stewart finished with 14 points on 6 of 9 shots and 11 rebounds, all in the first half, and had one blocked shot and one steal. Forward Irene Lopez scored 12 points on 6 of 8 shots and gathered six rebounds and passed two assists, and reserve forward Ashley Mason contributed eight points, nine rebounds, three assists and four steals. The Hawks' reserves outscored ACU's depleted bench corps, 46- 14, and enjoyed a 33-4 lead in second-chance points resulting from 25 offensive rebounds. 

Hock finished with 12 points, on 5 of 6 shots, grabbed six rebounds, passed five assists and stole the ball four times, and Heath totaled 10 points, one blocked shot and one steal. Sophomore forward Stephanie Brimhall (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) scored 10 points, six in the second half, and gathered nine rebounds and blocked one shot, and freshman guard Kiara White (Phoenix, Ariz./Washington H.S.) added nine points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Junior guard Jubilee Sutherland (Glennallen, Alaska/Glennallen H.S./Eastern Wyoming College) contributed four points, one three-pointer, two rebounds and two steals. 

ACU made 22 of its 50 shots (.440), 2 of 13 three-pointers (.154) and 6 of 10 free throws (.600), and committed 33 turnovers that led to 42 gift points for the Hawks. ACU also blocked four SDC shots and stole the ball 10 times. San Diego Christian out-rebounded ACU, 45-28, and gathered 25 offensive rebounds and passed off 22 assists, blocked three ACU shots and stole the ball 22 times. The Hawks made 41 of their 83 shots in the game (.494), 10 of its 20 three- pointers (.500) and 4 of 9 free throws (.444) and committed 16 turnovers.
