LA MIRADA, Calif. - Sixth-place Biola University (11-11, 2-5 GSAC) led 40-16 at halftime and built its lead to 40 points in the second half on its way to a 73-36 Golden State Athletics Conference victory over Arizona Christian University (4-15, 0-7 GSAC), Saturday, January 26, in Fultz Memorial Gymnasium.
Coached by Jerry Conner, ACU continues the GSAC season with a 7:30 p.m. road game (8:30 Arizona time), Saturday, February 2, at The Master's College in Santa Clarita, Calif., which ranks number eight in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' poll. The ACU men's basketball team, ranked 25th in the NAIA national poll, plays the 7:30 (8:30 p.m. in Arizona) game of the GSAC doubleheader at The Master's College.
In other GSAC women's basketball action Tuesday evening, number eight Westmont College (16-3, 7-0 GSAC), the first-place team in the GSAC, crushed Concordia University (5-14, 3-4 GSAC), 84-51, in Santa Barbara, and number four-ranked Vanguard (15-1, 6-1 GSAC) edged out number nine-ranked Master's, 69-65, in Costa Mesa. San Diego Christian College (12-11, 4- 3 GSAC) defeated Hope International University (9-13, 1-6 GSAC) in San Diego, 73-68.
Biola scored 16 consecutive points midway through the first half, while Biola went scoreless for 8 minutes and 34 seconds, and the Eagles led 25-5 with 8:24 remaining. Biola's biggest lead of the first half was its halftime margin, 40-16. Junior Adijat Adams, a 6-2 center, totaled 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles, and freshman guard Amy Freet scored 10 points, including seven points during Biola's first-half scoring streak.
Sophomore forward Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.), ACU's leading scorer and rebounder (13.1 ppg and 7.6 rpg), scored six points for ACU in the first 20 minutes. Biola made 16 of 39 shots (.410), 2 of 9 three-pointers and 6 of 10 free throws in the first half, while ACU made just 5 of its 28 shots (.178), 2 of 10 three-pointers (200) and all four of its free throws.
The Firestorm committed a low seven turnovers, and Biola committed four turnovers and out- rebounded ACU, 25-10.
During the first 5:38 of the second half, Adams scored eight points as part of a 15-4 Biola run that propelled the Eagles to a 55-20 lead with 14:22 left to go in the game. Biola gained its widest advantage of the game, 73-33, with 1:09 left, and led by no fewer than 32 points in the last 11 minutes of the game.
Hock led ACU with 10 points and three rebounds, and senior guard Paula Clendaniel (Tucson, AZ/Cienega H.S./York College (Neb.)/Arizona Western CC) hit 2 three-pointers for six points and added three rebounds, two assists and one steal. Senior guard Jessica Largo (Gallup, N.M./Rehoboth Christian School) finished with six points on 2 three-pointers and grabbed two rebounds, and freshman forward Cheyenne Huskey (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge H.S.) contributed four points and three assists. Sophomore forward Stephanie Brimhall (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) added four points and a team-high five rebounds.
Adams led all scorers and rebounders in the game with 26 points on 11 of 17 shots and 14 rebounds and blocked one shot. Freet added 10 points with one three-pointer and five rebounds, two assists and one steal, and guard Aubree Mittel finished with eight points, two rebounds and one steal. Reserve forward Elizabeth Munger finished with eight points, two rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocked shtos, and starting forward Chelsea Hill contributed six points, nine rebounds, two assists and one steal.
ACU made 13 of its 63 shots (.206), 4 of 26 three-pointers (.154) and 6 of 9 free throws (.667), and committed 15 turnovers. ACU also blocked two Biola shots and stole the ball five times. Biola, which out-rebounded ACU, 64-26, made 27 of its 64 shots in the game (.422), 3 of 15 three-pointers (.200) and 16 of 26 free throws (.615) and committed 15 turnovers. Biola blocked five ACU shots and stole the ball from the Firestorm 10 times.
