Concordia Wins Double Overtime GSAC Title Thriller over ACU

IRVINE, Calif. - Number four seeded Concordia University (22-10) prevailed 112-111 in double overtime over number three seeded Arizona Christian University (20-9), ranked 24th in the NAIA National Top 25 Coaches' poll, in the championship game of the Golden State Athletics Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, Tuesday, March 5, in CU Arena in Irvine, Calif. Concordia's All-GSAC guard Tim Harris sank the second of his two free throw attempts with four seconds left in the second five-minute overtime period for the final margin of victory. 

Harris finished with 38 points on 12 of 18 field goals, 4 of 5 three-pointers and 10 of 13 free throws, including the game-winning charity toss with four seconds left, and also gathered 7 rebounds and blocked one shot. Harris scored nine points in the first half, 17 in the second, seven in the first overtime and five more in the second overtime. 

Junior guard Talib Uqdah (Detroit, Mich./Westview H.S. (Avondale, Ariz.)/Chandler-Gilbert CC) totaled 43 points on 15 of 30 shots and 8 of 17 three-pointers and had 9 rebounds, 2 assists and one steal for ACU. Uqdah, who averages a team-high 20.9 points per game with 41 three- pointers in 10 games this season, scored nine points in the first half, 13 in the second half, 11 in the first overtime and 10 more in the second overtime. 

The two teams also played an single overtime game at CU Arena in the final regular-season game of the season, Feb. 23, with Concordia winning, 91-88. The two teams also led the GSAC in team offensive average and three-point field goals and three-point percentage and didn't disappoint as both teams scored well over their season averages of 84 and 80 points respectively, and combined for 22 three-point field goals in 49 attempts, including 12 of 27 by Arizona Christian (.444). ACU scored a season-high in points. 

Concordia reached the finals with an 80-77 upset victory over number one seeded Westmont College (25-7), March 2, and won its sixth GSAC Tournament Championship and first since 2010-2011. The Eagles also played in their fourth consecutive GSAC championship game. The Firestorm, directed by first-year head coach Jeff Rutter, placed third in the GSAC regular- season standings and second in the GSAC Tournament in its first year of membership. 

Concordia earns the coveted automatic berth to the NAIA National Championship Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri, March 13-16 and March 18-19. ACU has never played in an NAIA National Tournament, while Concordia is the defending NAIA national champion. 

ACU awaits word on whether it will be selected to play in the NAIA National Tournament as an at-large team. The 32-team NAIA Tournament field will be announced Wednesday, March 6, with eight first-round games taking place on Wednesday, March 13, and eight more first-round games on Thursday, March 14, in Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri. The first games of both of the first two days begin at 9 a.m. Central time. Eight second-round games happen on Friday, March 15, beginning at 9 a.m. Central time, and the four NAIA quarterfinal games are scheduled for Saturday, March 16, beginning at 2 p.m. After taking off Sunday, March 17, the tournament resumes with two semifinal games at 6 and 8 p.m. Central time, Monday, March 18, and the NAIA championship game is slated for Tuesday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m. Central time and will be televised live on CBS Sports Network. 

With 20 wins this season, the 2012-13 squad is the third ACU basketball team ever to win 20 or more games in a season. The 1996-97 team went 21-8, and the 1985-86 team recorded a 21-9 mark under the direction of former NBA player and coach Paul Westphal. ACU also received its first national NAIA and NCCA rankings this season. 

Arizona Christian trailed by seven points twice in the first half of Tuesday's title clash, 10-3 with 15:57 left and 20-13 with 11:00 remaining, but battled back both times and cut Concordia's advantage to just one point with two streaks of six consecutive points. After ACU sliced the margin to 20-19 with 9:01 left in the first half on a three-pointer by junior All-GSAC forward Jordan Block (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Claremont H.S./Pasadena City College), Concordia scored five consecutive points and led 25-19, with 7:24 to go before intermission. 

Sparked by five points from junior All-GSAC guard Charles King (Houston, Tex./Stephen F. Austin H.S./Phoenix College), including a three-pointer, the Firestorm put together a 10-2 run and went ahead for the first and only time in the first half, 29-27, on Block's jumper in the paint with 4:13 left. Concordia tied the game for the second time, 29-29, at the 4:01 left and led 36-34 at halftime. 

Uqdah scored 9 points with 2 three-pointers and 5 rebounds, Block scored 9 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, and King scored 6 points with one three-pointer in the first half. Guard Tim Harris led Concordia with 10 first-half points and 2 three-pointers, and guard Alex Rudd added 9 points and 2 three-pointers in the first half. ACU made 4 of its 13 first-half three-point field goal tries, committed seven turnovers and out-rebounded Concordia, 20-16, in the first 20 minutes, with 9 offensive rebounds that led to 10 second-chance points. Concordia committed six first-half turnovers and made 5 of its 12 three-point field goal attempts. 

With Harris scoring nine points in the first seven minutes of the second half, Concordia reached its widest advantage of the game, 54-43, with 13 minutes left to play. King scored five consecutive points for ACU and cut the lead to 54-48 with 12:15 left. Later, a streak of seven consecutive points at the end of a 16-6 run by the Firestorm reduced Concordia's lead to just one point, 60-59, with 7:44 left. Concordia scored four consecutive points and led 64-59 with 6:55 left, and ACU again cut the margin to one point, 67-66, with 4:55 left. 

But again the Eagles put together a small run of six points and led 72-66 with 3:40 left on a three-pointer by reserve guard DeLaun Frazier, but ACU mounted yet another comeback with six consecutive points, including four in a row by Block, in a span of 1:18 and tied the game at 72-72 with two minutes left in the game. After Uqdah tied the game at 74-74 with a jumper at 1:23, guard Peter Smith nailed two free throws with 1:13 left, giving Concordia a 76-74 lead. Block tied the game at 76-76 with a pair of free throws with 55 seconds remaining. 

Smith missed a three-point attempt with 40 seconds left, and King rebounded for ACU, but the Firestorm turned over the ball and Concordia's Lucas Simpson missed a jump shot at the buzzer. The teams went to overtime in CU Arena for the second time in the last 10 days. 

Uqdah gave ACU its biggest lead of the game, 80-76, with a three-pointer and a free throws just 18 seconds into the five-minute overtime period. The teams exchanged baskets three times, and ACU maintained its lead until Concordia tied the game at 86-86 on two free throws by All- GSAC forward Dakota Downs with 2:28 left in overtime. The lead seesawed back and forth with each team gaining an advantage three times. Uqdah scored eight consecutive points in the last 2:20 for ACU, including a three-pointer that gave ACU a 94-92 lead with 36 seconds left. 

A jumper by reserve guard Jywrell Wilson tied the game at 94-94 with 24 seconds left, and Wilson then stole the ball from Uqdah with three seconds left. Smith committed an offensive foul on the ensuing possession, and the first overtime ended with the score tied at 94. Uqdah scored 11 points in the first overtime. 

Uqdah stayed hot with 10 more points in the second overtime, including his second four-point play of the game that gave ACU a 105-100 advantage, its biggest lead of the game, with 2:47 left 

to play. ACU led 108-106 later, but Concordia scored five consecutive points, including Smith's three-pointer with 1:11 left and led 111-108. Junior forward Daniel Cornelius (Phoenix, Ariz./Phoenix Christian H.S.) nailed a three-pointer with 53 seconds remaining for a 111-111 tie. Cornelius fouled Harris with four seconds left, and Harris missed the first free throw and made the second, giving Concordia its final margin of victory, 112-111. Uqdah misfired on a three-pointer as time expired. 

Uqdah led all scorers in the game with 43 points and 8 three-pointers and was ably supported by Jordan Block with 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Charles King with 13 points, 2 three- pointers, 5 rebounds and one blocked shot. Freshman forward Jackson Helms (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley H.S.) finished with 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals, and freshman reserve forward Mike Navar (Chino, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) added 8 points and 6 rebounds. Senior guard A.J. Koch (Tucson, Ariz./Flowing Wells H.S.) contributed 7 points, and Cornelius also scored 7 points with one three-pointer and grabbed two rebounds. Junior guard Paul King (Pasadena, Calif./John Muir H.S./East Los Angeles City College) added 6 points and 3 rebounds. 

Besides Harris' 38 points and 7 rebounds, Downs recorded a double-double with 25 points, 19 in the second half and overtime periods, 11 rebounds, 2 assists and one steal, and Smith netted 13 points with one three-pointer, 5 rebounds, 10 assists and one steal. Rudd added 13 points with 2 three-pointers, 2 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals, and Frazier contributed 12 points with 3 three-pointers, one blocked shot and one steal. 

The Firestorm made 42 of 83 field goals (.506) for the game, 12 of 27 three-point tries (.444) and 15 of 19 free throws (.789), out-rebounded the Eagles, 47-44, stole the ball four times and committed 15 turnovers. Concordia, which committed 11 turnovers and stole the ball 7 times, made 39 of its 77 shots (.506), 10 of 22 three-pointers (.455) and 24 of 37 free throws (.649), and blocked four ACU shots.
