Box Score Phoenix, AZ- On Saturday afternoon, Arizona Christian concluded their 2015 season with a nice 3-1 win (25-23, 20-25, 28-26, 25-20) over William Jessup. Juniors Samantha McCants (19 kills, 25 digs) and Alana Kempf (15 kills, 16 digs) ended their seasons with double-double efforts.
The Warriors opened the first set with the lead that turned into an 11-6 edge. Down 12-8, the Firestorm started to make their move. Strong serving from Senior Kailaa Heaney- who was honored before the match with Senior Day, two kills from Sophomore Deborah White, and a kill by Kempf tied in with a few errors by WJU moved ACU ahead 13-12. After falling behind again, the Firestorm played catch up until a run of five straight hitting errors by William Jessup ultimately gave ACU a 24-22 edge. Two points later Kempf end the set with a kill.
Kempf recorded a set high five kills in the opener.
Set two started with Kempf picking up where she left off in the first set as she recorded kills on the first two points of the set. The Firestorm held the lead until 8-6 before the Warriors countered with a 7-0 run to take a lead they would not surrender the rest of the set.
Once again, Kempf was good for five kills.
After dropping the first point of the third set, Arizona Christian answered with an 8-0 run keyed by another Kempf kill and three kills from White. Building out to a 17-7 lead, ACU looked in control but WJU had other ideas. A 14-4 run turned the score into a tie and the Warriors eventually made the comeback complete as they took the lead and reached set point at 24-23. However, a kill from Sophomore Mariah Kempf tied the score at 24 all. A service ace from McCants gave ACU a 25-24 lead. A combined five errors closed out the set with Arizona Christian reaping the benefit of William Jessup committing three of those errors to earn the win.
The teams combined for 23 hitting errors in the third set.
The fourth and final set opened as a back and forth effort by the two teams that featured eight ties and three lead changes. The final tie came at 11-11 when the tide turned in favor of the Firestorm thanks three straight WJU attack errors. Sensing the opportunity for the win, Arizona Christian did not allow another tie. McCants put an exclamation point on the win as she hammered out a kill on match point.
McCants delivered an astounding nine kills in the final set.
Heaney and Sophomore Hailey Settle paced the offense with 28 and 21 assists respectively.
Defensively, Sophomore Morgan Stevens recorded 24 digs. Settle added 14 digs. White lead the charge at the net with six blocks.
