Box Score Phoenix, AZ- With Arizona Christian and Embry-Riddle racing up and down the floor, the shot clock was the least utilized piece of equipment in Fultz Gym on Saturday for the 107-72 ACU win. Senior Bobby Gray topped all scorers with 19 points. Twelve different ACU players contributed points on the scoreboard.
The game started as a back and forth affair. Senior Jackson Helms jump started the scoring 30 seconds into the game. The next 11 points resulted in one tie and four lead changes all in less than a two minute span.
Over the first nine minutes of the game, the teams exchanged seven lead changes and three ties and a total of 41 points. The Eagles (0-3)- playing just their third game as program- held a 21-20 advantage at the eleven minute mark.
However, a 13-0 run in two minutes and change by the Firestorm (3-0) broke open the game and would create no doubt about the outcome of the contest. Gray scored six points including four straight to begin the run. Junior Wolfgang Wood delivered five points sandwiched in between Gray's points sparked by a three pointer. Sophomore Trevor Clay capped the run with a tip-in rebound.
At the break, the Firestorm held a 61-35 advantage thanks to shooting an impressive 66.7% in the first 20 minutes. Gray (14 points) and Wood (12 points) were already in double digits thanks to shooting a combined 11-12 from the floor in the opening half.
The only thing to really slow down both teams all evening was the combined 55 fouls called by the officials which resulted in 67 combined free throw attempts. Thirty-one of those fouls came in the second half of play.
Joining Gray and Wood in double figures was Seniors Mike Navar and Collin Woods with 13 points each while Sophomore Andy Sessions added 10 points.
The ACU bench played a big role in the game as they contributed 53 of the 107 points. Arizona Christian concluded the evening with 54 points in the paint.
Helms was the only player to reach double digit rebounds as he pulled down ten boards.
Head Coach Jeff Rutter stated, "We did not come out as focused as we hoped and our execution suffered on both ends early in the game. We had a group off the bench come in and give us a big lift. They changed the game with their effort and intensity and that really got us going. I thought we played pretty hard after that."
Next on the schedule for the Firestorm is a matchup with Northern New Mexico on Tuesday evening in Fultz Gym at 7:30 pm.
