No Trouble In Prescott

Box Score

Prescott, AZ- Arizona Christian saw little resistance from host Embry-Riddle (AZ) as the Firestorm cruised to a 113-58 win on Wednesday night.  Senior Brandon Newman poured in 24 points.  Senior Jackson Helms was good for 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The Eagles (0-6) actually dialed in the first shot of the night- a three pointer.  Helms scored first for the Firestorm (9-1) followed by Junior Chris Sterling knocking down a three pointer.  First year program Embry-Riddle tied the score at 5-5.

It was all Firestorm from there after Senior Bobby Gray cashed in two points of his own.

After ACU built their first double digit lead, ERAU scored their next trip down the floor to cut the deficit to eight.  A jumper from Senior Mike Navar pushed Arizona Christian back in front by double digits and they stayed there the rest of the game.

ACU shot lights out in the first half as they converted 23 of 37 shot attempts (62.2%) from the floor in the first 20 minutes.  Helms was a perfect 6-6 from the floor and 4-5 from the free throw line to account for his 16 first half points.

Leading 60-32 at the break eventually turned into as large as a 60 point ACU advantage in the second half.

Junior Mishima Gray had a big second half as he poured in 13 of his 17 total points after the break.

Focusing on the ACU defense holding ERAU to just 37% shooting for the game, Head Coach Jeff Rutter stated, "We played well tonight.  We have the potential to go deep into our bench will little to no drop off and that is starting to become evident.  Some of our younger guys are starting to get comfortable and play confident.  We've spent a lot of time trying to get better on the defensive end and I think we have really progresses in that area.  We've had a few games in a row where we have had good effort and focus on the defense."

The Firestorm will have a much tougher test against another first year program when they head just down the road on Saturday to face St. Benedictine- Mesa.  The Firestorm edged the Redhawks just 84-83 a few weeks back.  The teams will tip-off at 7:00 pm at Mesa Community College.
