Firestorm Whack Warriors

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Arizona Christian Firestorm softball team extended their program best winning streak to now ten games with their 3-2 and 9-1 victories against William Jessup University on Saturday afternoon at Sandra Day O'Connor High School.

With the victories, Arizona Christian improves to 16-4 overall and 4-2 in GSAC play. With the losses, William Jessup falls to 9-19 overall and 1-7 in GSAC play.

Game one was a pitcher's duel; as runs came at a premium. The Firestorm struck first in the bottom of the second inning, when Patricia Porter singled in Brittany Vanderdrink; to make the score 1-0 in favor of ACU.

The Warriors responded with a two-run single in the top of the fourth inning, to take a 2-1 lead.

Alyssa Vanderdrink then singled in Abby Beasley in the bottom half of the fourth inning to tie the game at two. The Firestorm won the game on a walk-off RBI double by Brittany Vanderdrink; that scored Ilene Ruiz to give Arizona Christian the 3-2 victory.

In the win, Abby Beasley and Alyssa Vanderdrink combined to go 4-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI in the 3-4 spots in the Firestorm order.

Jackie Aguilar (6-3) earned the victory, going all seven innings while allowing just two runs on seven hits to go along with eight strikeouts and just one walk.

Game two was a low scoring game as well; until late. The Firestorm jumped on William Jessup starter Jessica Myers (2-8), for three runs in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Meaghen Nelson and a two-run homer by Eden Sheldon.

The Warriors got on the board in the top of the third inning, thanks to a bases loaded hit-by-pitch; to make it 3-1 in favor of the Firestorm.

Arizona Christian then struck for six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and held on for the run-shortened 9-1 victory in a final five innings.

Ashlynn Preciado (4-0) earned the victory, by tossing all five innings and allowing just a run on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

The Firestorm will finally have some time off to catch their breath, before returning to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon to face the Vanguard Lions at 1:30pm and 3:30pm at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex.
