Box Score 2 Phoenix, AZ- After ACU dropped Saturday's opener on a home run in the tenth, Senior Tatum Hendrix threw his second complete game in a row as Arizona Christian split 2-1 and 3-2 with William Jessup. Senior Christopher Burks and Junior Hector Ortiz were 3-8 on the day.
Game one was all about if only for both teams as the teams combined to strand 21 base runners in the twin bill opener.
In the third, a single by Junior Chance Randall turned pinch runner Sophomore Michael Dunnebecke aided by two WJU errors accounted for the first run of the day.
The score remained 1-0 until the Warriors (1-10, 1-5 GSAC) finally broke through with a run in the seventh.
Headed to extra innings, the game was ultimately decided by the first batter of the extra frame as Nathan Torres lead off the tenth with a home run.
Singles by Ortiz and Senior Tate Erickson were left stranded on the corners in the bottom of the tenth.
For the second weekend in a row, Sophomore Wade Mason drew the short straw of taking the loss after pitching pretty well in long relief.
William Jessup struck first in the day cap with a double and unearned run in the first.
The bottom of the third featured Dunnebecke reaching on an error before coming home on an RBI single by Erickson to a create a 1-1 tie.
A run in the next half inning for WJU gave them a 2-1 cushion. Including a single turned into a pick off, Hendrix retired the final 11 batters in order after William Jessup scored.
The Firestorm (3-7, 3-3 GSAC) were able to take advantage of their opportunity in the fifth. Burks and Ortiz opened the inning with singles. Burks came home on a groundout by Erickson for the 2-2 tie. Then two batters later, Ortiz trotted home on an RBI single by Junior Jacob Rodriguez for the final 3-2 tally.
Hendrix earned his second win of the season.
The Firestorm will have a fairly quick turnaround as they will host Eastern New Mexico on Monday. First pitch at Firestorm Field will come at 2:00 pm (AT).
