Hendrix Leads To Split Again

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Phoenix, AZ- After ACU dropped Saturday's opener on a home run in the tenth, Senior Tatum Hendrix threw his second complete game in a row as Arizona Christian split 2-1 and 3-2 with William Jessup.  Senior Christopher Burks and Junior Hector Ortiz were 3-8 on the day.

Game one was all about if only for both teams as the teams combined to strand 21 base runners in the twin bill opener.

In the third, a single by Junior Chance Randall turned pinch runner Sophomore Michael Dunnebecke aided by two WJU errors accounted for the first run of the day.

The score remained 1-0 until the Warriors (1-10, 1-5 GSAC) finally broke through with a run in the seventh.

Headed to extra innings, the game was ultimately decided by the first batter of the extra frame as Nathan Torres lead off the tenth with a home run.

Singles by Ortiz and Senior Tate Erickson were left stranded on the corners in the bottom of the tenth.

For the second weekend in a row, Sophomore Wade Mason drew the short straw of taking the loss after pitching pretty well in long relief.

William Jessup struck first in the day cap with a double and unearned run in the first.

The bottom of the third featured Dunnebecke reaching on an error before coming home on an RBI single by Erickson to a create a 1-1 tie.

A run in the next half inning for WJU gave them a 2-1 cushion.  Including a single turned into a pick off, Hendrix retired the final 11 batters in order after William Jessup scored.

The Firestorm (3-7, 3-3 GSAC) were able to take advantage of their opportunity in the fifth.  Burks and Ortiz opened the inning with singles.  Burks came home on a groundout by Erickson for the 2-2 tie.  Then two batters later, Ortiz trotted home on an RBI single by Junior Jacob Rodriguez for the final 3-2 tally.

Hendrix earned his second win of the season.

The Firestorm will have a fairly quick turnaround as they will host Eastern New Mexico on Monday.  First pitch at Firestorm Field will come at 2:00 pm (AT).
