Box Score 2 Phoenix, AZ- ACU softball capped a run of nine games in four days in impressive fashion as they used a walk-off home run to sweep Dakota Wesleyan 7-1 and 6-3 on Friday morning. Senior Abby Beasley was 5-8 with three doubles and five RBI while Junior Kylie Christman sent everyone home with the walk-off homer.
After escaping a little trouble in the top of the first, the Firestorm (23-9-1) wasted no time getting their offense going as Junior Sianna Gomez lead-off with a double. Senior Alyssa Vanderdrink walked before Beasley sent a single into the outfield to score Gomez. Christman singled to plate Vanderdrink. Beasley eventually scored on two errors by DWU.
In the third, Beasley singled before coming in to score on a double down the left field line by Senior Meaghen Nelson.
Beasley drove in the final three runs with RBI doubles in the fourth and sixth innings.
Senior Jackie Aguilar (11-4) threw a complete game with eight strikeouts and no walks. Her lone mistake was a home run hit by DWU's Paige Kinley- who actually produced three of the five hits against Aguilar.
The Tigers (15-11) came out as the aggressors in the second game. DWU connected on another home run- a two run shot in the first. They then tacked on a run in the third.
A single (which eventually became their third run) and walk for Dakota Wesleyan in the third chased ACU starter Freshman Ashlynn Preciado. Junior Destinee Spencer (9-1) came on in relief and was lights out allowing just a walk turned double play in the fourth and double in the sixth.
Offensively, after leaving the bases loaded in the first, the Firestorm appeared to be going through the motions of playing the last of the nine games in four days.
But when they reached the fifth, ACU woke back up and started the comeback process. Freshmen Jenna Castilleja and Anely Marcilla walked to open the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Gomez moved both into scoring position. An RBI single by Vanderdrink cashed in Castilleja. Beasley (who hit .645 for the week) doubled home Marcilla to find ACU down 3-2.
With one out in the seventh, Arizona Christian was still chasing one. Gomez started the final rally with a double to right center. Vanderdrink single to drive in Gomez and tie the game at 3-3. Beasley hit a smash to second and reached on an error to put runners on the corners for Christman. Christman properly sent the ACU fans home happy when she crushed a 1-0 pitch over the left center field fence for a three run walk-off home run.
Head Coach Trisha Thurston commented, "Today capped off a long four day, nine game span of games, and we earned two great team wins. Our senior pitcher Jackie was dominant once again on the mound in game one. Abby was unstoppable at the plate. Aly was her usual self making awesome play after awesome play on defense. Our week could not have ended in better fashion thanks to our dramatic come from behind victory in game two. We will rest up and keep getting better as we head into the second round of conference play."
The Firestorm will have a full week off to rest up and prepare for Menlo and William Jessup as the weekend approaches. ACU and Menlo will square off on Friday at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex beginning at 2:00 pm.
