Firestorm and Warriors Split? Finally

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

La Mirada, CA- Third time proved to be a charm as Arizona Christian finally played their road series with William Jessup on the neutral field of Biola on Sunday.  The Warriors won game one 3-1 before the Firestorm held on for a 7-6 victory in game two.  Junior Sianna Gomez once again led the way as she went 4-8 with a double, homer, and three runs scored.

After single runners were left stranded in the first and second, Gomez scored the first run of the game when notched her first home run of the season with a shot over the left field fence.

The Firestorm (29-13-1, 13-7 GSAC) loaded the bases in the fifth and put two on in the sixth but could not score any more runs.

Freshman Anely Marcilla allowed just one base runner in the first ten batters she faced.  But in the fourth she could not retire the first three batters that came to the plate as two singles were followed by a three run home run.  She only let two more runners reach the rest of the game.  However, without any more run support Marcilla was charged with the loss and went to 1-3 on the year.

Innings one and two of game two were scoreless before ACU erupted for four runs in the third.  Gomez was the first of five straight Firestorm to reach after singling to center.  Senior Alyssa Vanderdrink singled her home.  Senior Abby Beasley and Marcilla walked to load the bases.  Junior Meaghen Nelson then doubled to clear the bases and give Arizona Christian a 4-0 lead.

The Warriors (13-21, 6-10 GSAC) scored a run in the bottom of the third.

When Gomez doubled, Beasley singled, and Marcilla cashed in both runs with a single, ACU held what seemed like a comfortable 6-1 edge after the top of the fourth.

But WJU added a run in the bottom of the fourth.  Then they used two singles, two doubles, and a sacrifice fly to score four runs in the sixth and tie the game at 6-6.

Nelson answered for ACU with a double leading off the seventh.  She then stole third and scored the game winner on an RBI single off the bat of Junior Kylie Christman.

Sophomore Ashlynn Preciado, who came in to close out the sixth, made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh as she walked the bases loaded.  But a running catch by Beasley in left center brought the game to close.  Preciado collected the win and improved to 5-2 on the year.

Head Coach Trisha Thurston said, "It was good to walk away with a hard-fought win today.  Ending this long road trip 3-3 is definitely not ideal, but we are working to learn and grow every game.  The girls are continually being put in pressure situations because every team is tough.  Now, we need to learn how to thrive under pressure and play fearlessly."

The Firestorm return home to host Antelope Valley on Thursday at Rose Mofford Sports Complex at 12:00 pm.
