Box Score Phoenix, AZ- Despite outshooting Soka 14-10 on Saturday night, Arizona Christian could not cash in a goal as they fell 1-0 to the Lions. Freshman Juan Mora cracked eight of the 14 ACU shots.
Aside from a few chances missing left for both teams, the first 19 plus minutes were pretty quiet with five combined shots.
In the 22nd minute, Senior Jacob Drenth sent a shot over the woodwork. Four minutes later, Senior Luis Tapia collected a loose ball with the Soka keeper well of his line and Tapia launched a 40-50 yard arcing shot that just carried over the crossbar by a couple of feet.
Junior Alonso Quintero had a look from the left angle in the box but his shot was blocked away from the goal in the 35th minute.
Soka attempted the final three shots of the half as they went high, were denied by Freshman Joshua Stewart, and then went left.
In the first 45 minutes of action, the Lions (2-2-1) outshot the Firestorm 7-5.
The second 45 minutes was a different story as ACU held SUA to just three shots. Unfortunately, one of those shots found the back of the net. Ten minutes into the second half, a long ball played from the left side about 30 yards out connected with Yauri DeGroot on the back door who tapped home the goal.
Much of the next 25 minutes was both teams appearing to just go through the motions as only three combined shots were taken in that time frame.
But in the final ten minutes, the Firestorm (4-3) figured out they were running out time and upped their tempo in a hurry. Mora took control and he fired off five of the last six shots. In the 81st minute, Mora's free kick from 30 yards out just sailed over the left upper corner. Another free kick by Mora required a dramatic save from Soka's goalkeeper Ryan Schmucker to push the shot past the post.
With the final ten second count being announced, Mora hit one last depression shot with top spin that Schmucker did not handle cleanly. With Junior Ryan Scarpulla crashing the goal, he one timed the rebound from 10 yards or less out right on target but somehow Schmucker drove in front of it to keep the goal door shut.
On Tuesday, the Firestorm will open GSAC play as they head to Biola. The men will play the first game of the double header at 4:30 pm.
