Box Score Surprise, AZ- Arizona Christian won the opening set on Wednesday but lost the next three as they fell 3-1 (25-14, 15-25, 23-25, 24-26) to Ottawa (AZ). Junior Jackie Stein recorded 14 kills and 13 digs.
The Firestorm (9-10) rolled through the opening set not even allowing a tie. Junior Breanna Scott put down a kill and Sophomore Delaney Harris delivered a service ace. A kill by Senior Alli Lemnitzer, a block by Lemnitzer and Senior Toria Siemens, an OUAZ attack error, and another Scott kill pushed ACU out to a 6-1 lead. Up 13-10, Arizona Christian closed out the set on a 12-4 run.
ACU produced 13 first set kills while holding OUAZ to .000 hitting.
Falling behind 3-2 in the second set, Senior Debbie White pounded out two straight kills for a 4-3 lead. Sophomore Amanda Bakonyi made it 5-4 before the Spirit (6-8) grabbed the lead for good in the set.
Set three was back and forth with the Firestorm up 15-14 and then tied 17-17. After falling behind 22-17, ACU climbed back within 24-23 but OUAZ won the final point to take 2-1 overall lead.
On the strength of three kills from Freshman Stephanie Anguelsky, ACU jumped out to a 9-1 edge to start the fourth set. The Firestorm remained ahead until 16-15 before dropping behind. Two kills from Stein tied the set at 23-23 and 24-24. However, the Spirit closed out the match with the next two points.
Digs were key to ACU staying in the match as four Firestorm recorded double digit digs- Stein (13), Senior Morgan Stevens (12), Scott (11), and Harris (10).
On Thursday, the Firestorm will turn right around and host Benedictine-Mesa at 7:00 pm in Fultz Memorial Gym.
