ACU Slide Comes To An End

Box Score

Phoenix, AZ- On Thursday night, Arizona Christian knocked off Benedictine-Mesa 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-21) to end a seven match slide.  Junior Breanna Scott topped everyone with 12 kills.  Senior Debbie White produced seven kills without an error to hit .412 for the evening.

The match saw three ties and two lead changes in the first six points started by a kill from Freshman Stephanie Anguelsky.  Scott broke a 3-3 tie with a kill which in turn sparked a 9-0 ACU run.  Senior Alli Lemnitzer put down a kill in the run while Scott capped the run with back-to-back kills.  The set would not be any closer than five points the rest of the way.

Scott ended the opening set with five kills.

Anguelsky and Junior Jackie Stein combined for two straight blocks to start the second set.  The Firestorm would not even allow a tie and they cruised through the set by hitting .409.

Four more kills pushed Scott up to nine kills through two sets.  Lemnitzer was money as she accounted for three kills on four attacks without an error in the set.

The Redhawks (8-10) grabbed the first point of the third set.  Following a tie at 1-1, Benedictine burst out to 12-6 advantage.  But the Firestorm (10-10) fought their way back and tied the set at 13-13 on a White service ace.  Two Stein kills in row made it 15-13.  Benedictine briefly moved ahead at 17-16 followed by ties at 17-17, 18-18, and 19-19.  White found the hardwood with a kill and then teamed with Senior Kinsey Pease for a block.  Lemnitzer served up an ace and ACU was suddenly in front 22-19.  A kill and ace by Scott created match point.  After a kill for the Redhawks, White ended the match with a kill.

Behind the 12 kills of Scott, White (.412 hitting), Lemnitzer (.250), and Stein (.238) all had seven kills.  Pease gave out 27 assists with seven digs.  Sophomore Delaney Harris was good for 11 digs.

Head Coach Micah Briscoe said, "We came out in full force tonight showing the team we really are.  As a team we hit .274, had 11 blocks, and 6 service aces on the match.  This was the most complete game and unified team effort we have seen in a while.  Adversity is an opportunity for growth and our girls took that to heart and capitalized on this opportunity."

The Firestorm will now have over a week off from matches to rest and heal up.  Their next match will be on Saturday, October 14, at San Diego Christian.  The match will be played at the Santee Boys and Girls Club at 3:00 pm.
