Box Score Phoenix, AZ- In a matchup of two of the highest scoring teams in the NAIA on Friday night, Arizona Christian could not slow the University of Jamestown as they fell 100-86. Senior Matt Willkomm scored a game high 28 points. Senior Sam Finley was two points behind at 26 for the evening.
The Jimmies (8-2) came into the game scoring 99.9 points per game and the Firestorm (4-1) started the evening with an average of 96 points. If you like fast paced high scoring action- the two teams did not disappoint. Ironically, the teams ended the night with the same three point shooting line as they both connected on 11-23 shots from beyond the arc (47.8%).
Jamestown scored the first four points of the night. Arizona Christian countered with four of the next six points and were down 6-4. That turned to be as close as ACU would find themselves the rest of the contest.
From the beginning, the Jimmies were on target as they shot near 70% for the most of the first half. At the half, UJ was shooting 61.3% from the field and 54.5% from the three point line. ACU answered with 57.1% efficiency from the field and an impressive 71.4% from three point country.
At the break, Willkomm made seven of eight shots including 3-3 from deep on his way to 17 points in the opening 20 minutes. But ACU was down 48-41.
Junior Callum Lawson made a couple free throws to open the second half scoring and ACU crept within five points.
With 12:27 remaining, Jamestown own a 16 point edge. But ACU found an offensive rhythm and were back within four points on three occasions- a dunk by Senior Patson Siame, basket from Finley, and jumper from Lawson.
However, the Jimmies pulled away down the stretch. The difference in the game was free throws as Jamestown hit 23-31 from the line while Arizona Christian only attempted 11 freebies (made seven) on the night.
Lawson joined Willkomm and Finley in double digits with 13 points.
On Monday, the Firestorm will make the short trip to SAGU American Indian in Phoenix. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
