Box Score 2 La Mirada, CA- ACU Baseball earned a split with Biola on Saturday after winning game one 8-6 and losing 7-2 in the series finale. Sophomore Trent Troncone was 2-4 with a double and three runs scored. Junior Anthony Pins collected the win in relief.
The teams opened Saturday with three scoreless innings. In the top of the fourth, the Firestorm (14-12, 5-8 GSAC) struck first after Senior Harris Lyons singled, Senior Landon Teramoto ran as a courtesy runner, Junior Jonathan Nunnally, Jr. singled, and Senior Jose Pereyda lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Teramoto.
The Eagles (16-10, 6-6 GSAC) grabbed a 4-1 lead with a run in the fourth and three runs in the sixth.
Pereyda drove in two of the four runs with a single in the seventh that gave ACU the 5-4 edge.
Arizona Christian added a three spot in the eighth inning. Junior Kyle Robbins started the inning with a single to center. Teramoto pinch ran. Junior Michael Dunnebecke and Troncone were both hit by a pitch. Teramoto scored on a sacrifice fly by Junior Gary Sheffield. Senior Hector Ortiz had an RBI single. Lyons drew a bases loaded walk to score the final ACU run.
Biola scored two in the ninth before Senior Andrew Mirasty recorded a strikeout to end the game.
Junior Bobby Moretti started the game and went 5.2 innings. Pins came in and delivered 2.1 scoreless innings to earn the win and lower his season ERA to 1.20 in a team high 12 appearances.
Game two was all BU in the first five innings as they scored seven runs without the benefit of an extra base hit.
After missing a few chances in the early innings, the Firestorm found the scoreboard with single runs in the sixth and seventh. Junior Marco Castilla doubled to right center and eventually scored when Pereyda was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. In the seventh, Troncone recorded a pinch hit double leading off the inning. Two batters later, Castilla cashed in Troncone for the final run of the afternoon.
On Friday, the Firestorm will host Westmont to begin their three game weekend series. With time change around the rest of the country, all GSAC Friday games at ACU will now start at 3:00 pm.
