Box Score Phoenix, AZ- The first four innings on Tuesday against Benedictine-Mesa were bad for Arizona Christian, the next four innings were good for ACU, but the Redhawks prevailed 14-11 over the Firestorm. Senior Jake Howard and Junior Kyle Robbins both collected two hits and drove in two.
In the first four innings it was all Redhawks (19-11) as they plated 10 runs before the Firestorm (17-13) could create 12 outs.
ACU had a couple of chances in the opening four innings but could not push across a run. Senior Hector Ortiz reached on an error in the first inning and stole two bases but was left at third. In the fourth, Senior Kai Davis reached on an error before Robbins doubled behind him to put runners at second and third with nobody out. But a line out, strikeout, and groundout ended the inning without ACU putting a run on the board.
Using a Johnny-all-staff approach (seven ACU pitchers accounted for the nine innings without anyone throwing more than two innings) paid off as Junior Sam Landes did not allow a run in the fifth and Sophomore Baylor Giannini produced the only 1-2-3 inning of the afternoon in the sixth to begin his two innings of work.
The Firestorm started their comeback bid with a run in the fifth- Howard singled and Senior Harris Lyons doubled him home.
Then with the Johnny-all-play process underway, the Firestorm had basically emptied their bench by the time inning six rolled around and they showed their patience. The first six batters reached safely as Robbins walked, Junior Matt Mara walked, Junior Diego Briseno walked, Senior Landon Teramoto was hit on a 3-2 pitch to bring in a run, Senior Jacob Rodriguez singled in a run, Howard reached on a fielder's choice to drive in a run, and Sophomore Trent Troncone lifted a sacrifice fly to center to cap the four run inning.
Benedictine cashed in two runs in both the seventh and eighth that turn out to be huge.
Down 14-5, Arizona Christian sent 12 men to the plate in the bottom of the eighth and scored six runs without the benefit of an extra base hit. After two walks and a single, Robbins drove home two runs. Sophomore Julian Rosales scored his second run for Robbins as a courtesy runner when Mara singled to left. A walk, hit batter, and two more walks made it a six run inning to create the 14-11 score. With the bases loaded and two out, the potential winning run came to the plate but a strikeout ended the inning.
Neither team scored in the ninth to make the 14-11 score the final tally.
On Friday, the Firestorm will host The Master's to begin a three game GSAC weekend series. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown out at 3:00 pm at Firestorm Field.
