ACU Opens TMU Series With 9-4 Win

Box Score

Phoenix, AZ- On Friday, Arizona Christian opened their GSAC series against The Master's with a 9-4 win thanks to some late inning magic.  Junior Michael Dunnebecke was 2-4 with a double and a triple.

Starting his second Friday game in a row, Senior Joel Klinkhammer gave up a lead-off single that eventually came around to score on a double.  The Mustangs (15-17, 6-10 GSAC) scored another run in the top of the fourth.

The Firestorm (18-13, 9-8 GSAC) found the scoreboard after Senior Hector Ortiz singled, moved up on a wild pitch, fly out, and sacrifice fly by Senior Harris Lyons.  But despite a quality start with seven strikeouts, Klinkhammer left the game after six innings down 2-1.

Junior Bobby Moretti came on in the seventh and delivered a 1-2-3 inning with a pair of strikeouts.

But in the bottom of the seventh, ACU took advantage of a miscue in right field to push across three runs.  Dunnebecke tripled to right field and scored on a wild pitch to cap the scoring in the seventh and give Arizona Christian a 4-2 edge.

In the bottom of the eighth, ACU exploded for five more runs.  Junior Marco Castilla singled.  Junior Max Sias pinch ran and scored on a wild pitch and throwing error.  Ortiz doubled.  Junior Jonathan Nunnally, Jr. singled home Ortiz.  Junior Kyle Robbins used a double to bring home Nunnally.  Senior Jose Pereyda singled before Dunnebecke doubled home Robbins and Pereyda to conclude the Firestorm scoring.

Moretti (3-3) ran into a little trouble finishing out the ninth before Junior Anthony Pins came in to lock up the final out.

Head Coach Bill Swift stated, "Great job by Joel again! Gave us six quality innings! Timely hitting late in the game."

The Firestorm and Mustangs will continue their series with a doubleheader on Saturday at Firestorm Field.  The action will commence at 11:00 am.
