Firestorm Sweep Golden Eagles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Phoenix, AZ- On Tuesday afternoon, Arizona Christian hit for average and power mixed in with good pitching to sweep La Sierra 9-4 and 7-1.  As a team, ACU hit .439 with nine extra base hits while allowing just one earned run.  Junior Chelsea Havill had a big day going 4-7 with a home run and 5 RBI.

Game one started with the Golden Eagles (14-12-1) playing ultimate small ball and the Firestorm (19-20) throwing the ball all over the field.  LSU used four bunt attempts and three singles with three ACU errors mixed in to plate four unearned runs.

Despite having at least one baserunner on in every inning, LSU would not score again in the opener.

However, La Sierra returned the error favor in the third as two errors opened the door for Arizona Christian to score four unearned runs of their own.  Senior Yvette Ortega and Sophomore Taylor Babbitt both delivered RBI singles during the inning that tied the score at 4-4.

In the fifth, the Firestorm used a lead-off double by Sophomore Anely Marcilla, singles from Babbitt and Havill, another double from Senior Destinee Spencer, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sophomore Jenna Castilleja to score a pair of runs.

With two out in the sixth, ACU showed some power as Marcilla hit her first home run of the season.  Two batters later, Havill drilled her second home run of the season to nearly dead center- a two run shot- to account for the final tally of 9-4.

Spencer, who came on in relief of Freshman Hilaria Stewart to begin the fourth, closed the door from there to improve to 2-2 on the season.  The defensive highlight of the seventh was Babbitt delivering a throw on the money from left center to Freshman Alexis Honeycutt at second to gun down an LSU batter trying to stretch a single into a double.

Game two saw La Sierra score a run in the top of the first.  Just like the first game, they would have runners on base in every inning but once again were kept off the scoreboard in the final six innings.

Senior Sianna Gomez walked and stole second- her 22nd steal of the season (officially doubling the previous best ACU stolen base mark in a season).  Gomez scored on an RBI single from Junior Ashlynn Preciado.  Preciado checked in on an RBI double by Marcilla- which gave ACU a 2-1 cushion after one inning.

Two innings later, Havill drove home Preciado and Marcilla.

A double to center by Senior Meaghen Nelson and RBI singles from Freshman Paige Church and Marcilla helped the Firestorm add two more runs in the fourth.

Pinch runner Lainie Alves came home on a sac fly to finalize the scoring on the day.

Marcilla threw the first four innings to record the win and improve to 8-3 on the year.  Preciado pitched the final three innings.

On Thursday, the Firestorm will host Antelope Valley for a 2:00 pm doubleheader.
