Havill and Babbitt Lead To Sweep Of Ben-Mesa

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Mesa, AZ- Arizona Christian used 18 runs and 26 hits to sweep Benedictine-Mesa 8-4 and 10-3 on Wednesday afternoon.  Junior Chelsea Havill and Sophomore Taylor Babbitt both collected three RBI combined in the two games.

In the opener, the Firestorm (23-20) played small ball to perfection after Senior Sianna Gomez singled through the left side and stole second base.  Junior Cheyann Michael dropped down a sacrifice bunt and Junior Ashlynn Preciado lifted a sacrifice fly to right to allow Gomez to score the first run of the day.

The top of the third saw ACU push across four runs.  Michael reached on an error and Preciado doubled to left to put runners in scoring position without an out.  A groundout was followed by a passed ball to plate Michael.  Sophomore Anely Marcilla doubled home Preciado.  Babbitt reached on a fielder's choice.  Havill tripled into right field to bring home Marcilla and Babbitt to build a 5-0 advantage.

Senior Meaghen Nelson singled home Michael in the fourth.  A two spot was added in the fifth on an RBI single from pinch hitter Paige Church and an error.

The Redhawks (17-12) countered with only four runs spread through the final four innings.

Preciado improved to 7-11 on the year after tossing the first six innings.  Freshman Hilaria Stewart accounted for the final inning.

Ben-Mesa took their first and only lead of the afternoon with a single run in the bottom of the second in game two.

But ACU answered with a five run explosion in the top of the third.  Gomez and Michael singled one after the other.  Nelson doubled home Gomez.  Church walked to load the bases.  Babbitt doubled into the right center field cap to clear the bases ahead of her.  Havill then doubled to left center and Babbitt came on home.

Sophomore Jenna Castilleja used her speed to manufacture the first of two runs in the fourth.  Castilleja walked before stealing second and third while then scoring on a groundout.    Errors by the Redhawks allowed the second run to score.

Leading off the fifth, Babbitt doubled and scored on an RBI single to left off the bat of Junior Bridget Kruck.

For good measure, ACU tacked on two more runs in the seventh.  Kruck singled and scored on an error.  Castilleja came in on a single up the middle by Senior Yvette Ortega.

Senior Destinee Spencer (six innings) teamed with Marcilla to hold the Redhawks to three runs.

On Friday, the Firestorm will begin their final home stand of the season as they host Biola at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex.  First pitch is set for 2:00 pm for the all-important GSAC doubleheader.
