Firestorm Split With Flames

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Phoenix, AZ- Arizona Christian dropped the opener of their double header with Bethesda 4-3 before answering back with a 6-4 win on Saturday.  Senior Hector Ortiz was 2-5 with a home run, two runs scored, and five RBI.

The Flames (19-15) had runners on in each of the first two innings before pushing across a run in the third.

In the fourth, the Firestorm (22-18) answered with a two run blast from Junior Jonathan Nunnally, Jr.- his 12th of the season adding to his single season ACU record that he broke on Friday.

One half inning later, Bethesda tied the game at two with an unearned run.

ACU cashed in an unearned run of their own in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.

But a single, double, single, and sacrifice fly lead to two runs for Bethesda in the top of the eight.  ACU had seven batters retired in a row.  Then a single by Ortiz was turned into a double play and one out later the game came to an end.

Freshman Trevor McGee went five innings allowing just one earned run.  Freshman Tyler Domene, Junior Austin Bright, and Junior Bobby Moretti all threw at least one inning of scoreless relief.  Senior Andrew Mirasty was charged with the loss and fell to 0-2.

After the Flames left runners at the corners in the first inning of game two, the Firestorm grabbed on a 2-0 led following a single by Junior Marco Castilla and a bomb by Ortiz- his fifth of the season.

Come the fourth inning, Arizona Christian plated four runs on four straight RBI singles to build a 6-0 lead.

From there ACU held on as BUC scored on an RBI triple in the fifth.  In the top of the seventh, the Flames sent eight batters to the dish and scored three runs.  However, a groundout ended the comeback bid and game.

Junior Dillon Eaves (5-3) delivered five innings giving up one run for the win.

With Easter weekend coming, the Firestorm face a short week as they face San Diego Christian for their "weekend series" beginning on Wednesday at 3:00 pm.  The games will take place at Stars Field in Lakeside.
