Baseball Drops Doubleheader to William Jessup

Arizona Christian University Baseball dropped two games to William Jessup on Saturday.

In game one, William Jessup scored first taking a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning.  After scoreless innings of play, ACU knotted the game up at one in the bottom half of the fifth inning.  Senior Adam Wolfe drew a walk and then stole second base to get into scoring position with two outs.  Senior Michael Dunnebecke was able to plate Wolfe on a single to left field scoring the only game one run for the Firestorm (8-12, 3-9 GSAC).

The Warriors (19-5, 10-2 GSAC) scored in the top half of the eighth inning to take the 2-1 advantage- eventually holding on to that lead and securing the victory.

Dunnebecke led the Firestorm at the plate going 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Seniors Matt Mara, Dom Rodriguez and Jonathan Nunnally, Jr. all collected one hit a piece.

Sophomore Trevor McGee started on the mound tossing 5.0 innings allowing one run on one hit while striking out four.  Juniors Steven Butts and River Carbone along with Senior Dillon Eaves all saw action on the bump out of the bullpen.  Butts recorded the loss in the game tossing 2.0 innings allowing one run on two hits and striking out three.

In game two, ACU was able to strike first plating one run in the bottom half of the first inning.  Junior Christian Maggi led the inning off with a walk.  After a fly out, Mara drew a walk and Dunnebecke took his base on a hit by pitch to load the bases.  Maggi scored on a sacrifice fly ball by Junior Eric Schwalbe giving the Firestorm the early 1-0 lead.

The Warriors answered and took a lead in the top of the fourth inning plating four runs on two hits and two ACU errors.

Arizona Christian cut the deficit to one in the bottom half of the fourth plating two runs making the score 4-3. With one out, Sophomore Jordan Meier roped a single to left field giving the Firestorm a baserunner. Junior Trent Troncone advanced Meier to third base on a single to left field as both runners advanced a base on the throw.  Freshman Nash Gowin came through for ACU recording two RBI on a single to center to score both Meier and Troncone.

William Jessup answered and plated two runs in the seventh and held tough to win the contest 7-3.

Gowin went 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBI in the game. Maggi ended game two going 2-for-2 with one run scored.

Junior Baylor Giannini got the start on the mound throwing 3.0+ innings allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits while walking one and striking out four. Seniors Tony Pins, Austin Bright, Colton Wheeler and Sophomore Cam Sharp all saw action on the mound in relief.  Giannini took the loss on the mound falling to 1-1.

The Firestorm will take to the road heading to California next weekend.  March first ACU will play at University of Saint Katherine on Thursday before playing a three-game series with GSAC opponent San Diego Christian beginning of Friday.
