Box Score Phoenix, AZ- Friday's single game vs Westmont brought a lot of excitement as the game was suspended to Saturday morning after darkness. The Firestorm won 7-6 in walk-off fashion on solo home run to left field by Junior Nicholas McCormick.
Arizona Christian came out first scoring two in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Adam Wolfe reached first base on a hit by pitch. Senior Jonathan Nunnally, Jr. singled advancing Wolfe to second base. Shortly after, Wolfe advanced to third on a wild pitch. Seniors Matt Mara and Michael Dunnebecke also reached first base after each being hit by pitch scoring Wolfe from third. Senior Kyle Robbins drew a four-pitch walk scoring Nunnally Jr. giving the Firestorm (6-2, 1-0 GSAC) a 2-0 advantage.
Westmont cut the deficit in half in the top of the second inning leading to a productive inning for ACU in the bottom of the third inning. Nunnally led the half-inning off reaching first on hit by pitch. Mara drew a four-pitch walk bringing a pitching change for the Warriors (5-1, 0-1 GSAC). Dunnebecke then singled to third scoring Nunnally. Robbins added to the damage hitting a sacrifice fly scoring Mara. Dunnebecke scored the last run in the inning for the Firestorm on a double from Senior Dom Rodriguez- building a 5-1 advantage.
ACU added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Wolfe reached first on a hit by pitch and then stole second base. Wolfe scored on a single off the bat of Nunnally.
Errors by Arizona Christian allowed five Westmont runs (all unearned) in the eighth and ninth inning to extend the game into extra innings. After a scoreless 10th and 11th inning and the game suspended due to darkness, the teams resumed play on Saturday morning. Escaping the top of the 12th which included throwing a runner out at the plate, McCormick launched a solo homerun to left field winning the game for the Firestorm.
Nunnally led the Firestorm at the plate going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Dunnebecke ended the game with a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI. Robbins drove in two runs in the victory.
Senior Devin Rose started on the mound tossing 6.1 innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out 10 and earning a no-decision. Junior Steven Butts earned his first victory of the 2018 season throwing 2.0 scoreless innings over two days.
The Firestorm continued the weekend series with Westmont on Saturday with a doubleheader immediately following the walk-off.
