Box Score 2 Phoenix, AZ- On Wednesday, Arizona Christian scored three runs in both games against Benedictine-Mesa. ACU held on for the 3-2 win in game one before falling 5-3 in the night cap. Junior Taylor Babbitt collected three doubles while Sophomore Hilaria Stewart earned the complete game win in the opener.
The Firestorm (12-17) struck first in game one when Babbitt doubled with one out in the second. One out later, Sophomore Tatumn Porras singled Babbitt home.
Meanwhile Stewart retired nine of the first ten batters she faced. However, in the top of the fourth, the Redhawks (15-23) used a single and home run (the only real mistake Stewart made in the game) to take a 2-1 lead.
But in the bottom of the frame, Senior Ashlynn Preciado walked and then scored on an RBI single from Senior Bridget Kruck to tie the game at 2-2.
Senior Chelsea Havill began the fifth with a walk. Freshman Jennifer Vickman pinch ran and came into score on a sacrifice squeeze by Preciado for the 3-2 lead.
Stewart (6-3) recorded four of her six strikeouts in the final two innings to shut the door on the win.
With two outs in the top of the fourth of game two, Ben Mesa put together four straight hits to plate three runs. Freshman Shae Bushey doubled to center and then scored on a double by Kruck for a 3-1 game.
Benedictine-Mesa added two runs in the top of the sixth. ACU countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior Kylee Brown walked (Vickman pinch ran), Havill doubled (Junior Kassi Sanchez pinch ran), and Sophomore Paige Church walked to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Vickman and Babbitt doubled home Sanchez.
Arizona Christian would not get any closer.
Porras (3-5) struck out the side in the first inning before allowing runners in four of her six innings pitched.
On Friday, the Firestorm are scheduled to play at William Jessup. But rain will probably wash out Friday action (Sunday is a possible make-up date). A twin bill at Menlo on Saturday (which has moved back an hour to a 1:00 pm start) may be the first games played.
