Firestorm Close Out Series Against The Master's With Another Doubleheader Split

Santa Clarita, CA – The Arizona Christian University baseball team (12-6, 2-2) split another double header to wrap up the first weekend of GSAC play against The Master's (12-5, 2-2) as they won the first game 6-4 and dropped the second one 2-1 at Lou Herwaldt Stadium on Saturday in Santa Clarita, CA.

Series Notes:

With the split the Firestorm's record against the Mustangs moves to 17-37.

Game 1:

Jordan Vickers got the start and pitched 4 innings while allowing two runs, zero earned on five hits while walking two. Koju Sasaki (3-0) picked up the victory in relief pitching 2 2/3 innings while allowing two runs, zero earned on four hits while striking out four and walking one. Tarver would pitch the ninth inning allowing no hits and striking out two to pick up his fourth save of the season. Marques Titialli led the Firestorm's offense going 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

The Firestorm jumped all over the Mustangs in the first inning. After a leadoff double by Justin Ramirez Daniel Durazo laced a single into center field to put the Firestorm up 1-0. Later in the inning Titialli would drive in another run on an infield single to make it 2-0. The Firestorm would then add another run a bases load walk to take a 3-0 lead. The Mustangs would quickly answer in the bottom half of the first as they scored two runs to cut the Firestorm lead to 3-2. The Mustangs would then tie the game in the bottom half of the inning on an infield single to make it 3-3.

After a scoreless sixth inning the Firestorm would strike once again to retake the lead. This time Robby Campillo got the big hit with a double to left field to put the Firestorm back on top 4-3. Titialli then lined a double to right to extend the Firestorm lead to 5-3. The Firestorm weren't done though as Damien McElroy tripled to left to put the Firestorm up 6-3. Once again the Mustangs responded in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single to pull a run back to make it 6-4. That was as close as they would get though as Eli Elliot and Tarver closed out the game allowing no runs on one hit.

Inside the Box Score:

Titialli: 2-for-5, 2 RBIs

Durazo: 2-for-5, RBI

Campillo: 2-for-5, RBI

McElroy: 1-for-3, RBI

Garrison: 0-for-3, RBI

Game 2:

Jackson Hohensee (0-1) got the start and took the loss pitching 5 1/3 innings while allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out two and walking one. Robby Campillo led the Firestorm's offense going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Once again the Firestorm opened the scoring in the first inning. After Justin Ramirez led the game off with another double Robby Campillo brought him home two batters later with a single to left to put the Firestorm up 1-0. That would be all they would get though as the Mustangs tied the game in the bottom of the third on a sac fly to make it 1-1. The Mustangs would then take the lead on another sac fly in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Firestorm would have one last chance in the top of the seventh but were unable to produce as they fell 2-1.

Thoughts from Coach:

After the series Head Coach Joe McDonald stated, "It was great to see some strong pitching performances once again. Each and every game in this conference is a dog fight and this weekend was obviously full of bittersweetness. I like how competitive we are being and will continue to make strides forward and be ready to go for another big week."

The Firestorm hit the road as they travel to Tempe, AZ to take on Park-Gilbert on Tuesday, February 22 at Tempe Diablo Stadium at 6:00 PM Arizona time.
