Glendale, Ariz.- In a hard-fought match on Friday, Arizona Christian University's women's soccer team showed resilience against the NAIA number 21 ranked Hope International side, ultimately falling 3-0 at ACU Football Field.
ACU's offense, led by midfielder
Cami Mercado, showed flashes of brilliance throughout the game. Mercado was a constant threat, registering a team-high five shots with two on goal, keeping Hope International's defense on their toes. The Firestorm managed to create eight shots overall, demonstrating their ability to generate offensive opportunities against a tough opponent.
Defensively, ACU put up a strong fight in the first half, holding Hope International to just one goal before the break. The backline, anchored by
Alyssa Mercado,
Maya Cowan and
Noemie Antoine, who all played the full 90 minutes, worked tirelessly to contain Hope's potent attack.
In goal,
Tayler Wonderly started the match for ACU, while
Brenna Sonsini came in and made four saves.
The Firestorm also demonstrated their competitive spirit, earning three corner kicks and keeping pace with Hope International in that aspect of the game. Additionally, ACU's midfield, featuring
Felicia Apodaca and
Jada Barnett, worked hard to disrupt Hope's rhythm and create transition opportunities.
The Firestorm (6-6-2 overall, 4-4-2 GSAC) will look to bounce back in their upcoming match against Embry Riddle on Thursday, October 24.
