Honolulu, HI. - The Lady Firestorm used a stifling defense, and balanced scoring to defeat the Chaminade Silverswords for the second night in a row and make it a perfect road trip to the Rainbow state.
Head Coach
Rusty Rogers had this to say immediately following the victory, "I thought our All-American,
Alyssa Alvarez, played extremely well in the second half of Saturdays game and our depth played a significant role in our success in a hot and humid gymnasium."
As Rogers alluded to, the team received strong play from Alvarez scored 15 points while handing out six assists. They also received strong play fellow starters
Emily Till who scored 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, and
Halle Payne who had 12 points, 7 rebounds, and led the team with 3 steals.
The separator for the team this season though has been their bench play which came through again Saturday evening as the key stretch of the game proved to be the second quarter where the Firestorm outscored the Silverswords by fourteen points. After getting its first six points of the period from starters, freshman
Alana Washington came off the bench and scored five straight points. She then had a steal which led to a
Lauren Gunn jumper, and a two-point deficit was in a minute and a half span suddenly a five-point lead for the Firestorm. Freshman
Taylor Schwab then got into the mix producing a steal and free throw before
Shaylynn De Yager nailed a three pointer to extend the lead to nine.
Said Coach Rogers, "What a way to wrap up a great trip to Hawaii! Not only did the team have a great time together, but we also had the opportunity to see a lot of our younger players perform in pressure game situations."
