Arizona Christian

A five-run fifth inning and 17 total hits for the Benedictine Mesa Redhawks was too much for the Firestorm to overcome, as they fell 10-5 on Monday night. All five ACU pitchers allowed at least one run to score, an indication that small mistakes snowballed.

Sean Garcia was the Firestorm's offensive MVP, posting a season-high three hits in the contest, including a run-scoring double in the seventh. Tanner Vielguth and Trey Tarver each went yard in the ball game, the first being a solo shot and ladder being a three-run blast.

Andrew Ivy cooled down a bit offensively (1-for-5), but extended his hitting streak to six games with a double in the third inning.

Eli Elliott worked 4.0 innings while conceding two runs and five hits. With tonight's performance, he has racked up six strikeouts in each of his three starts this season.

Arizona Christian took the series 2-1, but remained winless on the road (0-9) in their all-time series with Ben Mesa.

Series Notes

The Firestorm are 18-14 all-time against the Jessup University Warriors in a series that dates back to the 2015 season. ACU won 10 of the first 12 matchups before the tide turned in Jessup's favor, the Warriors edging the Firestorm with a 12-8 record in the previous 20 games. With home field advantage, ACU possesses a 10-6 record but has dropped the past two, which are also the most recent meetings. Last season, Jessup won a three-game series 2-1 at Glendale High School by taking both of the Saturday double-header (22-6, 9-2). Enrique Porchas led the way with two hits, one home run and four RBIs in the two games.

Thoughts From Coach Joe McDonald

"Jessup is off to a hot start and much improved team from last year," Coach McDonald said. "Our strength of schedule we have played thus far has prepared us for the gauntlet of GSAC play. We look forward to this weekend's opportunity to get off on the right track."

Jessup

The Jessup University Warriors (10-1) opened their 2024 campaign with a four-game sweep of RV Oregon Tech at McBean Park. Their lone blemish was a 10-4 loss to Bushnell University in a double-header on February 2nd, but they responded by reeling off six straight wins. Jessup's 10 wins were decided by an average of 4.6 runs. This week's series with Arizona Christian will be the Warrior's first road games of the season. Jessup leads the GSAC in team batting average (.367) and home runs (35) while coming in sixth in team pitching (6.87 ERA). Trey Furrey is the Warrior's best hitter (.500 BA, 20 hits, 20 RBIs), Anthony Perez is the top pitcher (4.61 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 12 SOs) and James Williams III is the top fielder (55 POs, 3 Ast, 1.00 FLD%).
