Firestorm Efficiently Impressive In Season Opening Shutout

Glendale, Ariz.- In their 2024 season opener, Arizona Christian Women's Soccer defeated Goshen 5-0 on a hot Monday morning.  The Firestorm produced their five goals on just nine shots with six total shots on goal.  Cami Mercado quickly found her form on the season with two goals.  Abbey Glover collected three assists in her Firestorm debut.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Mercado beat three defenders in box to begin the scoring in the 29th minute
  • Cline hustled her way to a loose ball and scored in her first official collegiate game
  • ACU was up 2-0 at the break despite being out shot 4-3
  • About 15 minutes into the second half, Glover lofted a ball across the goal box and Mobo found the back of the net
  • Six minutes later, Glover slid a pass through the left side of the GC back line and Mercado raced on to finish into the right side of the goal
  • The second Mercado goal was her 28th career goal to give her sole possession of second on the all-time scoring list passing her former teammate Irene Ledezma (2017-21)
  • For Glover, her third assist of the morning tied her with the most ACU assists in a game (last accomplished in 2017)
  • Cruz completed the scoring with a penalty kick in 72nd minute
  • The Firestorm collected a season opening win for the first time since 2019

NEXT UP
Arizona Christian will have ten days off before returning to the competitive pitch when they find themselves up at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, OR.  ACU will not play in front of their home fans again until September 19 when they open GSAC play.
