Slow Start Dooms Lady Firestorm Against Redhawks

Mesa, AZ – The Lady Firestorm fell behind by twelve points in the first quarter and could not recover on the road against the Redhawks of Benedictine-Mesa.  The Redhawks led wire to wire despite Firestorm senior Emily Till filling up the stat sheet with 24 points, 15 rebounds, and 6 assists.

The story of the first quarter was eight Firestorm turnovers turning into twelve Redhawk points.  The Firestorm forced five turnovers themselves but was only able to turn those into three points.  Additionally, the Redhawks spread the ball around getting points from six different players, four different players scored 4 points in the period.

The second quarter saw the Firestorm find their three-point touch with three different players hitting from long range, but they were unable to cut into the deficit because the Redhawks Olivia Arvallo converted three times from long range by herself to keep the Firestorm comeback at bay.

The third quarter was dominated by Till as she scored 12 of her 24 points while going a near perfect 5-6 from the field.  But like in the second quarter, the Redhawks Arvallo would not let any serious dents into their lead by hitting a perfect 2-2 from the three-point line, and the team was able to match Till shot for shot.

In the final stanza, both teams saw a new player step up.  For the Firestorm it was Cayci Mussig going 3-4 from three-point range en route to 11 points in the period.  Two free throws from Mussig with 2:05 remaining brought he Firestorm within six points.  But like every quarter of the game, the Redhawks had an answer, and in this quarter it was Allanah Northam who went 3-3 from the field and 4-5 from the free line down the stretch, and with the help of four more free throws from Arvallo, they were able to seal the victory and send the Lady Firestorm to their first loss in conference.
