ACU’s Late Push Falls Short as SAU Claims Doubleheader

Glendale, Ariz. –  Arizona Christian dropped both ends of the doubleheader to Spring Arbor University, falling 3–2 in the first game before an 8–7 heartbreaker in the second game at the ACU Baseball Field.

Inside The Game

Game One
  • The first game of the afternoon unfolded as a tight pitchers' duel, with timely hits and early pressure making the difference.
  • Spring Arbor manufactured a run in the first inning when C. Reed stole third and scored on a throwing error. An RBI single in the second extended the Cougars' lead to 2–0.
  • ACU responded in the third when Kolten Lindstrom drove in a run with a groundout, trimming the deficit to 2–1. However, a solo home run in the fifth pushed the Cougars' advantage back to two.
  • The Firestorm closed within one in the seventh as Marcellus Cueva delivered an RBI single to score Noah Manasan, but ACU could not find the tying run late.
  • Casey Farrell took the loss, allowing three runs over five innings. 
  • Jack Brooker was outstanding in relief, striking out seven across four scoreless frames to keep ACU within striking distance. The Firestorm were limited to three hits in the contest.
  • ACU lost the game, 3-2. 
Game Two
  • ACU jumped out early when Joey Genduso launched a two-run homer in the first inning. 
  • The Firestorm added two more runs in the second and two in the third to build a 6–3 lead, highlighted by a Reese Vassar RBI double and an RBI single from Andrew Ivy.
  • Spring Arbor chipped away in the fifth to make it 6–5 before ACU answered with another RBI single from Vassar in the bottom half to take a 7–5 lead.
  • The Cougars rallied again in the seventh, tying the game at 7–7 on a run-scoring double and a groundout. 
  • The decisive moment came in the ninth when A. Brunin scored on a wild pitch, giving Spring Arbor an 8–7 edge.
  • ACU threatened but could not complete the comeback.
  • Reese Vassar led the Firestorm offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Genduso drove in three runs, while Ivy added two hits and an RBI. 
  • ACU finished with 10 hits but left several opportunities unanswered late.
  • ACU lost the game, 7-8.

Up Next
On Thursday, ACU will host their baseball field grand opening day just in time for conference play and host Embry-Riddle at 7pm.
