Phoenix, Ariz. - Arizona Christian University's senior guard Steffani Liscum (Tucson, Ariz./Marana H.S.) set a new school single-game scoring record with 39 points, 21 in the second half, as the Firestorm (6-13, 2-1 A.I.I.) recorded its second consecutive victory, 96-87, over Northern New Mexico College (2-13, 0-3 A.I.I.) from Espanola, New Mexico, in Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) women's basketball action, Friday, Jan. 13, at Fultz Memorial Gymnasium on the ACU campus.
The victory also gives ACU its first two-game winning streak of the season. Coached by Jerry Conner, ACU goes for its third consecutive win in Saturday, Jan. 14 home A.I.I. action against Northern New Mexico College at 1 p.m., in Fultz Memorial Gym.
The number five scorer in the NAIA Division II and the scoring leader in the National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) with a 22.9 point average, Liscum, who ranks second in the NAIA Division II in total points (435), scored 18 points in the first half and 21 more in the second half and made 14 of her 35 shots, 3 three-pointers and all eight of her free throw attempts. She also gathered five rebounds and stole the ball from NNMC five times.
Liscum and ACU freshman Sarah Beth Hock (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.) shared the previous record of 35 points, set earlier this season. Against Northern New Mexico, Hock totaled 15 points, 17 rebounds, 14 off the defensive glass, six steals and two assists and posted her eighth double-double of the season.
Junior guard Jessica Largo (Gallup, N.M./Rehoboth Christian H.S.) missed a triple-double by two assists, scoring 11 points, gathering 10 rebounds and passing eight assists but did earn her second double-double. On her 19th birthday, freshmen forward Jamie Heath (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird H.S.) came off the ACU bench and added 13 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal and made seven of her eight free throw attempts.
Freshman starting forward Stephanie Brimhall (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry H.S.), Hock's high school teammate, contributed eight points, seven rebounds, one assist, one blocked shot and two steals, and senior guard Anne Munsil (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy) finished with seven points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Northern New Mexico, limited to seven players due to a rash of injuries, was led by guard Melanie Vigil with 32 points, 23 in the second half. Vigil made 2 three-pointers, 6-of-6 free throws and added six rebounds, four assists and five steals. Guard Nisa Duran finished with 22 points, 13 in the first half, and 17 rebounds for a double-double, and also had four assists and seven steals, and guard Erica Williams totaled 17 points, 12 in the first half, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Starter Dorsheka Lopez contributed nine points, one three-pointer, one blocked shot and one steal.
ACU shot 41.2 percent from the field for the game (33-80), 13.8 percent from three-point range (4-29) and 72.2 percent from the free throw line (26-36). The Firestorm out-rebounded the Eagles, 55-44, survived 32 turnovers, including 18 in the second half, blocked five shots and stole the ball from NNMC 23 times. The Eagles committed 38 turnovers in the game, 20 in the first half, blocked three shots and stole the ball from ACU 16 times JWU shot 44.4 percent from the field (32-72), 26.9 percent from three-point range (7-26) and 61.5 percent from the free throw line (16-26).
ACU trailed 26-24, with 11:08 left in the first half after Williams' three-pointer, but the Firestorm outscored NNMC, 32-20, and led 56-46 on Liscum's two free throws with 30 seconds left before intermission. ACU gained its first 15-point lead, its widest advantage of the contest, on Liscum's basket and free throw with 18:31 left in the game.
Northern New Mexico sliced ACU's lead to 67-62, with 14:53 left as Vigil scored consecutive baskets in a span of 11 seconds. Once ACU regained its double-digit lead on Hock's three-point play with 11:34 left to play, the Firestorm maintained at least a 10-point lead until the 4:37 mark when NNMC cut the lead to 88-80. ACU led by at least nine points throughout the final four minutes.
