Firestorm Finish 1-2 In Fall Matches

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

Grand Junction, CO- A season opening fall trip to Colorado saw the Firestorm begin their year with a 1-2 record.  A win over Colorado Christian was the highlight of the trip.

Senior Desiree Curiel and Sophomore Tia Okano combined for a perfect 3-0 number three doubles record.  They won their first two matches 8-4 before notching their third victory 8-6.

With Curiel and Okano leading the way, ACU completed their doubles effort with an overall 5-4 record.

On the singles courts, the trio of Okano, Junior Mikayla Morgan, and Freshman Elizabeth Kelley all went 2-1.  Oddly enough all three lost their first match of the year against Metro State.

But Okano rebounded with an easy 6-2, 6-2 win over Colorado Christian before needing a 7-6 and 6-3 performance to claim her second win of the young season.

After falling to Metro State, Morgan countered with a double 6-2 beating of CCU.  She won her first set 6-2 against CSU Pueblo and was in front 3-0 before her opponent needed to retire.

Playing her first collegiate matches, Kelley responded nicely after dropping her first match by sailing past Colorado Christian 6-0 and 6-1.  With the help of 7-6 and 6-2 wins over CSU Pueblo, Kelley proved the future is bright for her ACU career.

The women will not play a countable contest again until February 2 when they travel to the Bay Area to face Mills College.  Morgan and Junior Autria Compton will be featured in doubles action at the Oracle Cup (NAIA ITA Championships) in Surprise, AZ, starting on Thursday.
