Good To the Last Point

Box Score

Phoenix, AZ- On Friday evening, playing in front of their all in ACU crowd, Arizona Christian came back for the 5-4 win by winning the last two matches of the evening.  Senior Desiree Jackson, Sophomore Mikayla Morgan, and Freshman Tia Okano all won both matches played.

Beginning play on the singles courts, Morgan and Okano collected the first two team points of the match.  Morgan cruised 6-2 and 6-1 on court two.  Okano won her first set 6-3 before running the gambit with a 6-0 second set win.

The Mavericks (9-3) grabbed the next three points for a 3-2 lead with Junior Lauryn Sullins putting up the biggest fight but still falling 6-3 and 7-5 on court six.  Senior Iulia Marcenco dropped her first set 7-5 but then let the second set get away from her at 6-2.

Court one was the last singles match playing as they would need three sets to decide their match.  Jackson and Frederikke Karst were tied 6-6 in the first before Karst won the next game for the set win.  But in the second and third sets, Jackson overpowered Karst and won fairly easily 6-3 and 6-1.

After singles, the team were tied 3-3.  On to doubles they went.

CMU won 8-3 on court three for a 4-3 edge.

With their backs against the wall, the Firestorm (6-0) came out swinging.  Jackson and Morgan held on for an 8-6 win on doubles court one to once again tie the score- this time at 4-4.  Court two was the final match playing to determine the team winner.  Okano and Marcenco were up to the task as they outlasted CMU's Emily Beckley and Amy Beeston to keep ACU undefeated on the season.

The next match on tap for the Firestorm will come Saturday against Hope International at the Phoenix Tennis Center.  The women are scheduled to start at 1:00 pm (AT)/ 12:00 pm (PT).
