Box Score Phoenix, AZ- Arizona Christian was up for the task of beating Hope International 8-1 on Saturday despite having finished their Friday night match on Saturday morning. Sophomore Macen Vargas produced two late rallies to pull off his win in singles.
With HIU only able to travel five guys, the Firestorm (2-5, 1-2 GSAC) were gifted two team points before swinging a racquet against the Royals (0-5, 0-4 GSAC).
Opening actual play in doubles, ACU won both contested- one easily 8-2 and one a lot closer at 8-6.
In the five singles matches, Junior Ezequiel Suarez had the easiest sailing with his 6-0 and 6-1 win on court four. The win for Suarez was actually the team clinching match.
Sophomore Santiago Galeffi was turned away by HIU's Mauricio Mosquera 6-1 and 6-2 on court one.
Despite playing three sets, court two was the fourth singles match done. HIU's Adrien Varenne won the opening set 6-4 and held a 2-0 edge to begin the second set. But Senior Tyler Cawthorne came storming back and won the next six games for the 6-2 second set win. In super tie break fashion, Cawthorne sealed his match win with a 10-4 third set win.
On court three, Junior Seth Moore and Anthony Sena exchanged several rallies but Moore held firm with scores of 6-4 and 6-2.
The final court playing was number five. Fighting cramps throughout, Vargas kept playing through the pain. Down 6-5 in the first set, Vargas answered back to win 7-6. In set two, Vargas once again found himself down 6-5 and he prevailed 7-6 over Michael Maiolo.
The men return to the courts when they face off with Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks on Wednesday. First serve will be at 5:00 pm (AT)/ 4:00 pm (PT).
