Box Score Santa Barbara, CA- After losing their first meeting of the year 7-2, Arizona Christian lost just 5-4 to #9 Westmont in a team match that went down to the very last match playing. ACU won four of the six singles matches but could not hold off the Warriors in doubles.
Beginning the day in singles, the Warriors (5-4, 5-0 GSAC) won the first two matches winning in straight though Senior Tyler Cawthorne forced a 7-5 result in his first set on court one.
But the Firestorm (4-7, 2-4 GSAC) fought their way to the next four wins with three of those courts playing into a third set. Senior Michael Munguia was the only Firestorm to win in two sets as he won 6-2 and 6-4.
Junior Ezequiel Suarez versus David Akin on the fifth court was the next match completed. Akin won the first set 6-1. However, Suarez came right back to win the second set 6-3. In the third set, Suarez need an extra game but pulled out the 7-5 third set win.
Court two sandwiched 6-3 scores around a second set 6-4 result. Sophomore Santiago Galeffi fell in the first set before countering with wins in the second and third sets.
The final singles match came on court three. Junior Seth Moore and Christian Mathis exchanged 6-2 wins in the first two sets. In the third and final set, Moore outlasted Mathis 7-5 to give ACU a 4-2 edge headed into doubles.
On the doubles court, Moore and Sophomore Macen Vargas just started into their match playing one game before they were forced to retire handing Westmont their third team point.
Westmont won the action on court two with a score of 8-5 to knot the match at a 4-4 tie.
Everything came down to doubles court one. The first 14 games resulted in a 7-7 tie. The Warrior combo of Carl-Phil Lindqvist and Travis Kimsey held off the Firestorm duo of Cawthorne and Suarez by winning the final two games for the literal game, set, and match result.
The Firestorm stay in California for two more matches beginning with Holy Names on Sunday on the neutral courts of the Costa Mesa Tennis Center. The men are scheduled to play at 12:00 pm.
