Women?s Tennis Wraps Up Share Of GSAC Title

Box Score

Phoenix, AZ- Playing their final regular season match of the year, #10 Arizona Christian knocked off Biola 7-2 on Saturday to earn a share of the GSAC regular season championship.  Senior Iulia Marcenco and Freshman Tia Okano were near perfect on the day winning in singles and doubles.

With the Firestorm (16-3, 8-1 GSAC) and the Eagles (5-15, 3-6 GSAC) opening in singles and ACU controlling five of the six matches, doubles was not even needed to determine the team winner.

Appearing for the final time in a match on the Phoenix Tennis Center courts, Marcenco brought her "A" game as she gave up just one game in the process of rolling to a 6-0 and 6-1 win on court four.

Biola earned a straight sets win on court five.

Junior Lauryn Sullins was on cruise control as well as she delivered a 6-1, 6-0 win on the number six singles court.

After dropping her first singles match of the season last time out, Okano returned to prime form as she beat Brooke Sanford 6-2 and 6-1 on court three.

Sophomore Mikayla Morgan produced the tennis version of snake eyes as she eased her way through double 6-1 scores on court two.

Senior Desiree Jackson facing Madeline Heer played the closest singles match of the day though Jackson still won to the tune of 6-3 and 6-2.  Jackson's win gave ACU the team match with a 5-1 score after singles.

Teaming with Freshman Lauren Garcia, Sullins claimed her second win of the day with an 8-2 run through the first doubles match to be completed.  Okano and Marcenco continued their dominating days as they gave up just one game in an 8-1 court two win.  The Eagles duo of Heer and Kelsey Post held off Jackson and Morgan 8-5 on the first court to claim the final team point of the day.

With the win, the Firestorm finish up their GSAC slate with an 8-1 record.  Number eight Westmont currently stands at 7-1 but still has one match left on Tuesday as they host Hope International.  Barring a major upset, the Warriors will finish at 8-1 as well to share the GSAC championship with the Firestorm.

The next time the Firestorm see the court for a match will be at GSAC Tournament out at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.  With the probable regular season tie, the top seed between Arizona Christian and Westmont will probably be determined by the team with the highest ranking in the upcoming NAIA Top 25 poll on Tuesday.  The top seed of the tournament will play the winner of the fourth seed Biola and fifth seed Hope International matchup and the second seed will face third seed Lewis-Clark State.  Both top seeded matches will be played on Wednesday, April 20, at 9:00 am in Indian Wells.
