No. 13 Firestorm Best No. 21 Westmont

Box Score

Santa Barbara, CA- Facing each other for the first time since meeting in last year's GSAC Tournament Finals, #13 Arizona Christian bested #21 Westmont 8-1 on Saturday.  The teams played through a location change and a few rain delays to get a finalized match.

After Westmont dominated the GSAC Finals match ten months previously, Arizona Christian turned the tables and dominated play on Saturday.

Delayed by courts drying and the men playing a marathon match ahead of them, the women were finally able to get started with doubles play.  The Firestorm (5-3, 1-1 GSAC) set the tone early as they swept doubles 8-4, 8-1, and 8-4 over the Warriors (0-3, 0-1 GSAC).

Singles action was started but only one match finished before darkness became an issue.  Oddly enough, the one singles match finished was the one match that ACU lost.  So with Arizona Christian up 3-1, the match moved from the Westmont campus to the Santa Barbara Tennis Club.

Weather even played a factor in the restart after the location change.

Once play resumed, Junior Autria Compton (6-1, 6-0), Freshmen Jayci Kelley (6-1, 6-1- the team winning point), and Senior Desiree Curiel (6-4, 6-2) controlled the action against their Westmont foes on courts four through six.

Courts one and two were definitely much more up for grabs.

On court two, Freshman Melanie Dreux and Isabel Lee needed a tie break point to determine both sets.  Dreux prevailed 7-6 and 7-6.

Junior Mikayla Morgan earned the first set win with a 6-3 result on court one.  But Cade Pierson won the second set 6-4 to set up the third and final set.  Up 5-4 and serving for match point, Morgan indeed closed out their match at 6-4 in the third.

Head Coach Chris Tolson stated, "The women came back strong today beat a solid Westmont team.  I am proud of their mindset today having to switch sites and rain delays, keeping their composure and effort level up the entire time."

The Firestorm women will play a rain makeup match against Whittier on Sunday.  The women are hoping to begin play at 2:30 pm AT/ 1:30 pm PT.  As for the Warriors, they will challenge Cal State Los Angeles on Monday at 2:30 pm PT.
