Eight Is Great In Three Game ACU Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

Tucson, AZ- Day two of Arizona Christian's participation in the Tucson Invitational saw ACU sweep the day by scoring eight runs in all three games.  Senior Yvette Ortega had a big Friday as she hit .714 in her two games worth of work.

Game one of the day against Jamestown (ND) saw the Jimmies (13-11) score a run in the top of the first.  However, the Firestorm (12-11) responded with a seven run bottom of the first.  Senior Sianna Gomez started the inning with a double and topped off the scoring with an RBI single.  Sandwiched in between was a double by Junior Cheyann Michael, three walks, two singles, and an RBI groundout.

Jamestown scored a run in the third and ACU answered with a run of their own- Sophomore Jenna Castilleja walked, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Gomez.  The Castilleja run made the game 8-2 at the time but turned out to be the game winning run.

The Jimmies collected 13 hits on the day and nine of them were of the extra base variety.  Four straight doubles in the fourth produced three runs and a two run home run in the seventh made it a one run game.  However, Freshman Hilaria Stewart (4-3) stranded the potential game tying run at first in the 8-7 ACU win.

A game with Judson (IL) followed.  The Firestorm scored all eight of their runs in the first three innings but had a runner reach third base in every inning of the game.

In the bottom of the first, Freshman Paige Church and Ortega delivered RBI singles as ACU scored three runs.  Church drove in two more with an RBI single in the second.  A walk, out, and four singles- Ortega, Junior Bridget Kruck, Castilleja (2 RBI), and Gomez (RBI)- scored three additional runs and gave ACU a 8-0 edge.

The Eagles (13-5) kept the game alive with a sacrifice fly and then hit a home run in the seventh.  But Junior Ashlynn Preciado (3-7) went the distance in the 8-2 win- allowing just one earned run.

The final game of the day pitted Arizona Christian against Dakota State.  The Trojans (9-11) scored three runs in the top of the first.

But once again Arizona Christian used a big inning to grab a lead.  Senior Destinee Spencer started the bottom of the second with a double.  Two quick outs appeared like the inning would not lead to much scoring.  However, the next six batters reached safely including RBI singles from Castilleja, Gomez, Michael, and Junior Chelsea Havill, and suddenly ACU had pushed across five runs.

A two run home run in the top of the third tied the game at 5-5.  ACU rallied the troops again to score three in the bottom of the third.  Pinch hitter Allisa Miller walked.  Ortega singled before pinch hitter Ariana Garcilazo lifted a sacrifice fly to second.  Castilleja singled and Gomez drove in two more runs.

DSU added a run in the fourth but Spencer (1-1), who came on in relief in the second, earned the win by throwing the final six innings of the 8-6 triumph.

Head Coach Trisha Thurston stated, "Awesome day today for the ladies - we have had contributions from every single player on the roster. So far this weekend, each pitcher on staff has earned a win as well. We are getting into a groove and finding ways to win ball games. We need to get rest and recover well tonight to be ready for two big games tomorrow."

On Saturday, the Firestorm will close out their appearance at the 2017 Tucson Invitational with two games.  First pitch is set to come against Purdue-Northwest at 11:00 am at Lincoln Park.
