Box Score Phoenix, AZ- Senior Roberto Valenzuela scored a three goal hat trick to highlight a 4-2 win over Benedictine-Mesa on Saturday. With the win, the Firestorm swept their four meetings with their three Arizona rivals.
Valenzuela needed just two minutes to find the net after taking a feed from Junior Anthony Archuleta and tucking a shot into the corner of the goal. Twenty minutes later, Valenzuela and Archuleta pulled off a nearly identical goal as the first one- played from the right and finished in the middle.
The Redhawks (2-2) bent a free kick into the goal to create a 2-1 game.
At the break, the teams had both taken six shots.
Five minutes into the second half, Sophomore Damian Sanchez dribbled through about three Ben Mesa defenders and laid a ball off for Sophomore Alex Segura who scored his third goal of the season.
Benedictine-Mesa closed the gap again to just one goal when they converted a penalty kick in the 66th minute.
However two minutes later, Valenzuela answered with his third goal of the game and sixth of the season when he delivered on a 1-on-1 situation thanks to a feed from Segura.
The win gives ACU bragging rights for a year after they beat Ottawa (AZ) and Embry-Riddle (AZ) once and Benedictine-Mesa twice.
On Thursday, the Firestorm (5-2) will head off to California to begin Golden State Athletic Conference play against Hope International. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
